Gender Awareness Infographic or Slide Deck

Welcome to the Gender Awareness Infographic Assignment! I’m excited to see what you create. Gender is a complex and fascinating topic, and it's important to be aware of the different ways that gender can impact our lives. We have learned about the different ways that gender is defined and expressed, as well as the challenges and opportunities that different people face based on their gender identity and expression.

This assignment is designed to help you learn more about gender and its impact on society and to communicate that knowledge to others in a creative and engaging way.

Before you start the project, there are a few things that you should keep in mind for creating a successful project:

· Choose a topic that you are passionate about. This will make the research and design process more enjoyable, and your enthusiasm will come through in your infographic.

· Consider your audience. What do they already know about your topic? What do you want them to learn?

Step 1: Review the topics in the course schedule and the course Learning Resources.

Step 2: Identify a topic that interests you—a topic that you believe the public could benefit from having more information about.

Example: Internalized Sexism.

Step 3: Locate 1-2 Learning Resources from our course (whether they were required or optional) that pertain to your topic. Decide what information is relevant.

Examples: Internalized Sexism (Capodilupo, 2017) and The Impact of Gender Stereotypes (Wood, 2018)

Step 4: Identify at least 1 peer-reviewed research journal article published within the past 3-5 years that pertains to your topic. Decide what information is relevant.

Example: Feigt, N.D., Domenech Rodriquez, M.M., & Vaszquez,A.L. (2022). The impact of gender-based microaggressions and internalized sexism on mental health outcomes: A mother-daughter study.  Family Relations: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Family Studies, 17(1), 201-219. http://dx.doi.org.ezproxy.umgc.edu/10.1111/fare.12622

Step 5: Identify information from credible websites/internet articles that pertain to your topic.

Examples:  Psychology Today ,  Medical News Today

Step 6: Using the information from Steps 1-5, write a 1 ½ -2 page, 12-inch font, double-spaced, APA Style overview of the topic. In your overview, describe why you selected the topic, why the public can benefit from knowing more about the topic, and a brief outline of the contents included in the infographic or slide deck ideal for Social Media posts or included as an internet resource. Include an APA Style reference list at the end of the overview.

Formatting Tip: Use bullets or outline format and paragraphs with headings where appropriate. *Note: There will be less information in your infographic or slide deck. This requirement provides the instructor with context for the quality of your research and overall preparation process. 

Once you have gathered your information, you can start to design your infographic. Be sure to use clear and concise language, and to incorporate visuals such as charts, graphs, and images. You should also use a font and color scheme that is easy to read and visually appealing.

Step 7: Create a 2–3-page infographic or 4-6-slide slide deck that includes a combination of at least 5-6 interesting facts, statistics, definitions, Q&As (common questions and answers), and myths countered with accurate information. 

Step 8: Identify  free images or clip art to enhance the infographic or slide deck. If you use tables, charts, or graphs from articles, learning resources, or websites, credit the source. Students can also create original images, tables, figures, etc. 

Step 9: Review your Infographic or Slide Deck Overview and Reference List (Step 6) and revise. 

Step 10: Review your Infographic or Slide Deck and revise.

Step 11: Review the Grading Rubric and your project. If necessary, revise. 

Step 12: Consider sharing your infographic with someone you know to see if they have any questions, comments, or suggestions and if your points land the way you wish them to. You can also have a screen reader read your paper and writing to you, just so you can edit your work through the auditory channel.

Step 13: Submit your project. 1-2 files (Word file, PDF, File, and/or jpeg or PNG); the overview (Step 6)  and  the infographic/slide deck (Step 7).

Tips and Resources:

· Do not wait until the last minute to begin this assignment. This assignment is about process as much as it is product. A lot of important learning and skill-building happens in the execution of this assignment.

· Use a free template if you are unfamiliar with creating infographics or slide decks. The following resources have free templates. There are also tutorials for creating infographics and slide decks on. YouTube.

Use of ChatGPT/Generative AI

Generative AI programs like ChatGPT can produce content that, on the surface, might look “like” a good effort on this assignment. However, because this assignment requires you to engage in genuine legwork and demonstrate your ability to synthesize and apply your understanding of our course material, AI databanks do not have the insights necessary to provide the attention to nuance, critical thinking, and authenticity needed to do well on this assignment.

Regarding the quality of writing, AI is infamous for offering vague connections and overgeneralized commentary. This does not reach the level of specificity, creative/critical thinking, and genuineness we are looking for here. In other words, it does not produce good writing – using overly flowery, expansive, over-used language [i.e., “AI-tells”] so characteristic of its algorithm). So, in this instance, over-reliance on AI generative tools will not satisfy this assignment.

You could potentially use ChatGPT and other generative AI software to ask a pointed question (i.e., “What’s a synonym for ‘depression’?”), to generate ideas for topics, or to offer feedback on your finished product (thus practicing using AI for  your process but not your product) – the method consistent with the UMGC policy on the matter.  Your  writing is your thinking and that’s what your instructor needs to see. Your writing must speak from the point of view of the scholar of psychology that you are and bring in points that authentically represent your critical thinking skills. In other words, the written, submitted text must be exclusively your own.
