Mental health and justice-related issues

Within the social work field, my passion is related to mental health and justice-related issues. I strongly believe that we should keep ourselves well-informed and we should learn about the interaction of mental illness and the justice system (Hensel, et al., 2020). Social work has always been a particular heart issue for me due to a wish to work with socially disadvantaged groups of people and to help make society better and more socially fair. During my schooling adventure, I have found myself passionate about various concerns including using the trauma-sensitive approach, availability of good mental health services, and creation of intervention strategies for marginalized groups.

The prime concern I have is what works– and what does not –when it comes to mental health interventions that are provided to refugees and asylum seekers. As the number of those affected by leaving home is expanding, dealing with the problem of finding and giving culturally tailored and trauma-informed psych aid is becoming particularly important (Jannesari, et al., 2021). I am eager to discover the numerous hurdles taken up by displaced persons and asylum seekers, including the acculturation stress, trauma reactions manifestations, and the hindrances they face in seeking healthcare.

There is a need for engagement with the radical styles of well-being methods like empowerment to resilience development and solving the reflections in their experience (P. Iqbal,et al.,2022). This would mean looking at tradition and culture-based programs as well as other interventions like peer support are an integrated part of the approach to mental health.

I expect to make some contributions to this area through the research that I decide to conduct. So, I can provide evidence-based practices promoting mental well-being and integration of refugees and migrants. Also, apart from pullings for mental health disparities reduction among this population, I will be advocating for mental health-focused policies that will place the needs of this population first.

Research Methods and Questions

The research question in the study by Liebling et al. (2024), revolves around understanding the perspectives of South Sudanese refugees in Northern Uganda regarding sexual misconduct and torture, particularly focusing on their views on survivor-led justice initiatives . The justification for this research wuestion lies in the need to address the gaps in justice systems for those who have endured torture and/or sexual and gender-based assaults among refugee populations, emphasizing their perspectives and the effectiveness of survivor-led initiatives. This study adopts a qualitative methodological approach. The researchers conducted narrative interviews with forty-one women and twenty men refugee survivors, as well as semi-structured interviews with thirty-seven key informants from various organizations. Qualitative methods are well-suited for exploring complex social phenomena, such as justice perceptions among marginalized populations, and allow for in-depth exploration of individual experiences and meanings. Thematic analysis was employed to identify and analyze the themes emerging from the data.

The research question in the study by Hensel et al. (2020), centers on the prevalence of mental disorders amongst all justice-involved people in Canada. The justification for this question lies in the need to address mental health issues within justice-involved populations, highlighting the importance of understanding the extent of mental disorders in this demographic. This study employs a quantitative methodology. It utilizes linked health and justice administrative data to conduct a population-level analysis of mental disorder prevalence among justice-involved individuals in Manitoba, Canada. The researchers utilize statistical analyses, including age- and sex-adjusted prevalence rates, to compare mental health outcomes among justice-involved individuals with those of the general population. The use of numerical data, statistical comparisons, and population-level analysis aligns with the characteristics of a quantitative approach, allowing for the generation of numerical findings that quantitatively describe the prevalence of mental disorders among the target population. This quantitative methodology is appropriate for addressing the research question as it enables the researchers to provide statistical evidence regarding the commonness of mental disorders within the justice-involved populations, thereby contributing to the understanding of this critical intersections of mental health and the justice system
