My decision to focus on homelessness as my final project topic stems from an increase in the number of people living on the streets in my city. The rise in homelessness piques my curiosity in unraveling the complex web of factors contributing to this prevalent problem. Homelessness, as a societal problem, encompasses issues such as a lack of affordable housing, mental health concerns, and systemic barriers that prevent individuals from breaking free from the cycle of homelessness (Unanima International & Quinn, n.d.). My goal in focusing on these diverse elements is to untangle the complexities of homelessness and identify potential pathways for intervention and resolution. Through my investigation, I hope to get a more nuanced knowledge of the varied nature of homelessness and contribute to the larger conversation about this pervasive societal issue.
I chose to explore the social issue of homelessness for my final project, using sociology and psychology as my guiding social science disciplines. Sociology will provide a macro-level examination of societal institutions and policies causing the problem of homelessness. This viewpoint is critical for comprehending the larger systemic aspects contributing to the problem, such as housing affordability and social inequality. Psychology, on the other hand, will provide a micro-level investigation, diving into the specific experiences and mental health issues faced by persons who do not have secure housing. This perspective will offer detailed insights into homeless people's problems and coping techniques (Kaushik & Walsh, 2019). The use of sociology and psychology was deliberate to examine the difficulties underlying homelessness thoroughly. I hope to bridge the gap between systemic impacts and individual tales by integrating these two disciplines. This multidisciplinary approach recognizes the linked nature of society systems and personal experiences, allowing for a more thorough understanding of the problem.

Instructions Create a reference list of at least four scholarly sources that you will use in your final project. References should follow APA format (7th edition). Finding scholarly sources For this part of the final project, you will use the UMGC Library BEHS 210 Course Guide , UMGC Library databases, or Google Scholar to locate four scholarly or credible sources on your chosen topic. Your articles should represent at least two different social science disciplines. What is a scholarly or credible source? You should rely on sources that have credibility. Appropriate sources are articles written by experts in the field, articles found in peer-reviewed journals, published documents from well-known research groups (e.g., Pew Research), and reports published by government agencies (e.g., NIH, CDC). Inappropriate sources would include popular websites (e.g., about.com, ehow.com, Wikipedia) or media outlets (e.g., Fox, MSNBC, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Forbes, etc.). These sources do not always accurately report their findings and are sometimes prone to bias. If a website or article fails to report the credentials of the author(s) and does not include citations for the information contained in the article, chances are it is not a scholarly source and therefore should not be used. Submit a summary of each article using the attached worksheet. In your own words, identify the key findings of the article. Do not simply state what the article was about (e.g., "This article talks about cyberbullying"). What specific information did you learn from your source? (E.g., "Cyberbullying has become a popular means of abuse among teenagers, affecting about half of all young people.") The purpose of the key findings section is to demonstrate that you have read and understood each of your sources. Your key findings should be 300 words in length. Do not simply copy and paste the abstract or any other part of your source! This violates the university's Academic Integrity policy . The purpose of this assignment is to 1) ensure that you are using appropriate, scholarly sources, and 2) to make sure you are on track for your final project. Goings, T. C., Salas-Wright, C. P., Howard, M. O., & Vaughn, M. G. (2017). Substance use among Bi/multiracial youth in the United States: Profiles of psychosocial risk and protection. The American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse, 44(2), 206-214. https://doi.org/10.1080/00952990.2017.1359617 (this is a proper source citation in APA formatting) |

Key findings (300 words) |
This article presents findings from a study that examined the issue of substance use in bi/multiracial youth. The authors suggest that bi/multiracial youth participate in substance use more frequently than monoracial youth. The study had several significant findings. Bi/multiracial youth engaged in higher use of tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and other illicit drugs more so than other youth of color. They also engage in higher levels of marijuana use than white youth. However, findings also revealed that bi/multiracial youth were involved with more psychosocial protectors – such as being raised with a stronger anti-drug message, and having parents more involved in their lives. Many also experienced lower levels of psychosocial risk than monoracial youth, such as peer pressure.
One major finding presented in this article was the identification of two subgroups of bi/multiracial youth that was based on both psychosocial risk and protective factors. The first subgroup exhibited high levels of both psychosocial protection and psychosocial risk. The second group had low psychosocial protections and, and high psychosocial risk. The authors found these two groups to be different in terms of their substance use. For example, the group with low protection and high risk reported much higher levels of use of tobacco, alcohol, and other illicit drugs. This suggests that bi/multiracial youth are not homogenous, and that their heterogeneity should be considered in terms of substance use risk.
The authors suggest several important implications from these findings, especially in terms of designing prevention and intervention efforts aimed at bi/multiracial youth to address substance abuse. These implications take on increased importance as the population of bi/multiracial youth has been increasing significantly over time. They also suggest that these programs focus on enhancing psychosocial protections for these youth, rather than only focusing on protective factors. The authors conclude by mentioning two model programs as being exemplary with this approach – The Strong African American Families Program, and Communities That Care.

Assess the usefulness of this resources to your project. How will you use the findings for your final project? If you found that this resource was not useful, please discuss why. (100 words) |
My topic is on substance use among adolescents. This article addresses several issues that are relevant to my topic from a psychological viewpoint, including psychosocial protections and risks in the context of substance use. It also discusses a population that has been less focused on in many of the articles I have read. Since the population of bi/multiracial youth is increasing in society, this article will help to ensure that I look at this issue from the perspective of different demographics of youth.
(This description reiterates the topic and fully describes how the article will be relevant from the viewpoint of one of the social sciences. It gives a valid reason of how the article will be useful for the final project. It also meets the required word count). |
