Laure, this is an interesting reflection on racial history and identities in Great Britain and you have some good points in here. From here - and for the next essay - you can consider ways to thoughtfully analyze the relationship between identity and outcomes. The Windrush scandal is worth delving into a bit more, too. Finally, you have opportunities to offer more analysis in your final paragraph. Follow APA formatting guidelines for in-text citations as well as in your bibliography. I look forward to reading your next essay. |

Society and Issue Overview
In this study, I will focus on the Ethnic-Racial Identity of the people of Britain and the experience of the racial minorities living in a country that has a history of Immigration and Colonization. There can be no doubt that Britain is a multicultural society that was formed as the result of colonialism, migration, and socio-political changes that took place over the centuries. Mass immigration started post-World War II, with immigrants from colonies that were then part of Britain, such as India, Pakistan, the Caribbean, and Africa. These communities were attracted to Britain due to their lack of human capital but were met with hostility and discrimination.
The Windrush Generation, the immigrants who arrived in Britain from Caribbean countries between 1948 and 1971, is one such example of a group that made a substantial contribution to British society while suffering from racial injustice (Slaven, 2021). The Windrush Scandal that occurred not long ago, where many Blacks from the Caribbean who were legally residing in Britain were detained and deported, presents a clear picture of the ever-prevailing racism that faces Blacks in Britain (Slaven, 2021). Even though Britain boasts of a multicultural society, ethnic-racial minorities can still be associated with various problems connected with racism, xenophobia, and social exclusion.
Relevant Sociological Theory
The most relevant sociological concept about this matter is the concept of race identity. Racial identity pertains to how race is experienced in the social world and how this gives meaning to one’s self-conceptions. In the context of the British nation, the concept of race refers to the colonial history of the country, immigration laws, and racial discrimination that is still present in contemporary society. Researchers have tried to understand that race is a private and public dimension for people of color, especially in postcolonial societies such as Britain.
Racial identity is described by Umaña-Taylor et al. (2014) as a component of the individual’s social identity based on history, culture, and experiences of prejudice. This is because, in Britain, race is associated with class and immigration status since most, especially the blacks, are also in the working class, thus complicating their social status. This notion is backed by double consciousness, a theory coined by W.E.B. Du Bois to explain the struggle of subordinate persons in societies that compel them to embrace racial differentiation. In Britain, Black people may suffer from the notion of double consciousness due to their integration into a society that not only discriminates against them but also exoticizes them.
A criticism that has been raised regarding the racial identity theory is that it homogenizes differences between racial groups. The situation of ethnic minorities in Britain is quite diverse based on their country of origin, their religion, and social status. For example, the Muslim population in Britain experiences both racism and Islamophobia, while the Black British population may have different experiences depending on their nationality, whether they are from Africa or from the Caribbean.
Scholarly Article Summary
The article Ethnic-racial Identity in Europe: Adapting the Identity Project Intervention in five countries by Juang et al. (2022) discusses the application of the Identity Project, an experimental intervention that was developed in the United States to address ethnic-racial identity exploration and resolution, in five European countries – Germany, Greece, Italy, Norway, and Sweden. The paper also explains how these sociohistorical contexts influenced the adaptations of the SOC, pointing out that while identity development was at the center of the construct, some deep structure modifications were made. These changes were the shift from race to migration and foreignness as primary categories of reference and the inclusion of the debates on national and regional identities in addition to the ethnic-racial ones. The authors also described that in each country, the cultural relevance in addressing ethnic-racial identity in multicultural classrooms was important; both the etic and emic approaches were important in developing an intervention that is relevant to each country.
According to the study, adaptations contributed to youth’s better understanding of their ethnic-racial identity in multicultural environments, their culture, and their relation to national and regional affiliations. Comparing the results and analyzing the differences and similarities in the process of identity formation in different countries contributed to confronting stereotypical views on multicultural Europe and developing the theory of identity formation.
Why I Chose This Topic
I selected this article because the author looked at how ethnic-racial identity can be changeable about culture, which is a theme I am also interested in concerning racial identity in Britain. One of the key points of the article that helped me is the analysis of how sociohistorical aspects, like migration and national identity, affect ethnic-racial identity. Furthermore, the idea of adolescence as a developmental phase where identity is shaped aligns well with the sociological questions regarding race and citizenship in diverse societies. The ideas presented in the article will assist me in comprehending the nature of race and racial identity in a diverse and post-colonial Britain.
