Assignment 2: Research Report Preparation

800-word minimum, not including reference list.  Worth 20% of final grade. Be sure to cite your sources in APA style and to include a reference list at the end of your assignment. Due date:

This assignment is the preparation for your Assignment 3, which will  address a significant social issue regarding race or ethnicity in a society other than the United States. This assignment should address the following (note: a full paragraph is usually 3-6 sentences):

1. What society (other than the United States) and what specific issue in this society do you plan to examine? Please provide a basic overview of the issue and its history/context in 2-3 full paragraphs, using at least two authoritative sources (be sure to cite them and include them in your reference list).

2. What sociological theory or concept do you expect might be relevant to explaining  some aspect of this issue and/or its possible solution? Please write a thorough overview (3-4 full paragraphs) of this theory or concept, using at least 3 authoritative resources (at least one of which should be a Learning Resource from our course). Your overview should include ways in which sociologists have defined and applied this concept/theory, as well as at least one criticism of the theory. Here are some suggestions:

Race conflict theory

Contact hypothesis

Double consciousness

Racial identity

Intersectionality

If you would like to select a different sociological theory or concept, please check with your faculty member.

3. Go to the UMGC Library and find a “scholarly journal article” (other than any you may have already cited in this assignment) that addresses some aspect of racial and ethnic relations in the society you have chosen. Write a 2-3 paragraph summary of the findings of this article and explain why you anticipate that this article will be helpful for your project. Be sure to cite the source and include the source (including the UMGC Library Permalink) in your reference list.

4. Why did you choose this topic? Please explain why this topic is important and/or interesting to you (1 full paragraph).
