Write 3 brief paragraphs, one for each volunteer session you completed. In each paragraph mention: 1. Describe the service work that you completed. 2. Indicate what you feel are the biggest strengths and weaknesses of the organization pertaining to the service work that you completed. Provide examples to support your statements. For example, if you felt that they were not well organized you can say that was their biggest weakness but you must provide at least one good example to support your statement. If you volunteered at the same organization twice then you should write the second paragraph describing what was different about the second session from the first, what additional insight did you gain by going a second (or third) time?

Describe the biggest challenge for you personally to complete the service work assignments overall. Explain how you overcame the challenge. If you can think of several just pick the most challenging one to write about.

What was your biggest take-away from the service work overall? What will you remember for a long, long time? If you had more than one really good take-away then please mention those just briefly while giving me greater detail on the biggest one.

Inspiration

Did you meet anyone during your service work who truly inspired you? If so, please describe this person and explain in what way they inspired you. What organization was it at and what role did they perform at the location? How important was their role to the success of your task(s)?

Impact

What impact did this semester's service work have on your outlook on life? On your career going forward? Dig deep for your thought but then answer this question in as few words as you can and still get your point across.

Do Differently

What do you feel should be done differently with the service-learning project for next semester? In your unique experience tell me also what you liked and should not change? I will take these comments into account as I get the syllabus ready for next semester's class.

There are no specific formatting or length requirements for the SL Essay however I will give you this guideline: a basic WORD .doc or .docx of 2-3 pages, double spaced, with 1 inch margins, 12pt Arial or Times New Roman font. I'm looking for well-organized quality work, not quantity. Title and save your document as Last Name_First Name_ServiceLearning.

The essay should address the following topics and you should present them in the same order with the following section titles:

Write one paragraph for each service-learning session completed. You should have a minimum of three, and may add a fourth or fifth for extra credit. After completing these first session paragraphs of description of your various sessions you now need to write the following paragraphs about the overall experience of all your service learning this semester:

1. DESCRIPTION (repeat this section three or more times describing each of your sessions in one separate paragraph)

a. describe your first session as instructed.

b. describe your second.

c. describe your third.

d/e. describe a fourth and fifth for extra credit.

2. CHALLENGE (one paragraph overall for the entire assignment)

3. TAKE-AWAY (one paragraph overall for the entire assignment)

4. INSPIRATION (one paragraph overall for the entire assignment)

5. IMPACT (one paragraph overall for the entire assignment)

6. DO DIFFERENTLY (one paragraph overall for the entire assignment)

After these sections you will find a table in the template for your Service-learning Log. Please complete each box in the table for full credit. If you performed a fourth session for extra credit, there is an extra column for that. If you performed a fifth session there is no extra column so you can either re-do the table to add the information in one additional paragraph.

Submission Procedure (this is the only acceptable way to submit this assignment):

1. Please click the title above that says "Service Learning Essay" in order to submit.

2. Once you click the title, scroll down to select 'Browse My Computer'.

3. Find your SL Essay wherever you saved it on your computer or thumb drive and attach. For example my submission should contain the file attachment: Buschman_John_ServiceLearning.docx

4. Click "Submit". If you have technical problems with the submission contact FIU Online Tech Support, not me.

If you have questions about the content, what to include, then contact me or our TA and not FIU Online Tech Support.

Besides the above requirements be sure you have completed at least 3 Facebook Selfie Posts as I will be looking back to see those as I read your essay.

The essay, with the table filled out and your Facebook posts completed all count towards your final score on this assignment which in total is worth 100 pts. I will need to see a minimum of 3 Facebook entries with a selfie or photo of you at the session for you to get full credit. Those entries are worth 20 pts. each and they need to match what you are putting in your essay and table. If I was your principal contact at an event then just put me down as the contact. The Essay with the completed table is worth 40 pts. Total for Service Learning is 100 pts. which is 20% of your overall grade so pay attention to getting all three items complete.
