As you have learned through your research and reading, not all individuals diagnosed with a disability under the disability categories in IDEA will qualify for services. For your discussion question, select one of the three scenarios below.
Scenario 1: Ian is a 4-year-old preschooler diagnosed with ADHA. Although he has a disability identified under IDEA, his IEP team does not feel he meets the criteria for special services. While in your learning environment, Ian runs around, does not follow directions well, and interrupts your large group.
Scenario 2: Madison is a 6-year-old first grader who has been diagnosed with a hearing impairment under IDEA, yet she does not qualify for special services. You find after several observations that she is not fully understanding directions, is often left out of group play during recess, and does not always respond to questions.
Scenario 3: Kelly is a 5-year-old child who has just been diagnosed with dyslexia. At this time she does not meet the criteria to receive special services under IDEA. In your learning environment, Kelly struggles with recognizing some letters of the alphabet and she also writes several numerals backward.
For your initial post, share what kind of accommodations you would make in the learning environment to ensure the academic success for the child.
