Self-disclosure is important in developing relationships, establishing intimacy, and allowing us to share private information with that special someone. Sometimes it is difficult to self-disclose information about ourselves because we are allowing ourselves to become vulnerable and run the risk of being judged. Chapter 3 of your text discusses the principles of self-disclosure, the benefits of self-disclosure, and the risks of self-disclosure. In Chapter 2 we spoke a lot about cultural differences; how might one's culture influence self-disclosure?

Why do you think some people disclose more personal information while others disclose very little personal information? How does culture influence how much or little we self-disclose? For example, what are the cultural norms for a collectivist culture in terms of self-disclosure? How about a high context culture? What does your culture or co-culture teach about self-disclosure? Why do people disclose more personal information in an online relationship than they would in a face-to-face relationship?"
