In NU 760, you submitted an assignment in module 6 that provided an overview of the strategy and methods you identified as being most appropriate (e.g. the best fit) to improve outcomes in your practice setting. Utilizing faculty comments and feedback on your proposed strategy, this assignment directs that you create a presentation that could serve as a part of your ‘pitch’ to your Project stakeholder group.
Create a presentation that provides the following information:
1. The strategy you selected for the project (anticipated to take 2 to 4 slides)
1. Identify the strategy
2. Provide your audience with a brief overview of the strategy
3. If your strategy is application of an evidence-based practice, ensure that you provide your audience with a brief overview of what you found in the literature about the strategy
4. If your strategy is an innovation, ensure that you provide your audience information about how your review of the literature did not reveal an appropriate evidence-based practice strategy and that an innovation is needed
2. A rationale for why you believe the selected strategy is the best fit for the practice setting (anticipated to take 2 to 4 slides)
1. Correlate the main elements of the strategy to the improvement needs identified
3. A brief overview of the plan for implementing the strategy in the practice setting (anticipated to take 3 to 4 slides minimum)
1. Utilizing a change theory to frame the discussion, provide an overview of the steps that will be taken to implement the identified strategy

Effectively Managing Behavioral Health/Mental Health Illness in a Med/Surgical Unit: Strategy and Methods
I. Introduction
A. Purpose of the Project
The aim of this project is to enhance the management of behavioral health and mental health illnesses within a med/surgical unit. We aim to develop and implement a comprehensive approach that integrates educational initiatives, policy changes, and technological solutions to improve the care and outcomes of patients with co-existing physical and mental health conditions (Haruna et al., 2022).
II. General Approach to the Problem
A. Multifaceted Approach
Our general approach to addressing the problem of managing behavioral health and mental health illnesses in a med/surgical unit is multifaceted. It involves a combination of educational interventions, advocacy for policy changes, and the integration of technology to facilitate early detection and intervention.
III. Specific Application of the Approach
A. Educational Initiatives:
Development of Training Modules:
This component involves creating educational modules specifically designed for healthcare providers. These modules will serve as a structured and comprehensive way to educate medical staff about behavioral health and mental health issues (Haruna et al., 2022). The goal is to increase the awareness and knowledge of healthcare providers regarding these issues, ensuring they can identify, understand, and appropriately respond to patients who may have both physical and mental health conditions.
Interdisciplinary Workshops:
Interdisciplinary workshops aim to foster collaboration and communication among different healthcare professionals, such as medical and mental health specialists. These workshops provide a platform for professionals from various disciplines to come together, share their expertise, and develop a unified approach to patient care (Haruna et al., 2022). This collaboration is essential to ensure patients receive holistic treatment that addresses both their physical and mental health needs.
B. Policy Changes:
Revision of Admission Criteria:
This component involves advocating for changes in the admission criteria for patients admitted to the med/surgical unit. The proposed change is to include mandatory mental health assessments for all patients upon admission (Sovold et al., 2021). This policy change aims to ensure that patients with underlying mental health conditions are identified early in their hospital stay, allowing for appropriate interventions and treatment planning.
Updated Protocols:
The project seeks to implement updated protocols within the med/surgical unit. These protocols will guide healthcare providers in the assessment, monitoring, and management of patients with behavioral health and mental health issues. These updated protocols are designed to standardize and improve the quality of care provided to patients with dual physical and mental health conditions.
C. Technological Integration:
Electronic Health Record Enhancements:
This component involves enhancing the electronic health record (EHR) system used within the med/surgical unit. Specifically, it includes integrating tools and features related to mental health assessments. By doing so, healthcare providers can seamlessly collect and analyze data related to a patient's mental health alongside their physical health information (Knaak et al., 2017). This integration streamlines the documentation process and ensures that no aspect of the patient's health is overlooked.
Telehealth Solutions:
Implementing telehealth options entails providing remote access to psychiatric consultations and support for patients within the med/surgical unit. This technology-driven approach allows patients to receive timely mental health services without the need for in-person visits, especially important in cases where specialized mental health expertise may not be physically present in the unit (Sovold et al., 2021).
Mobile Apps for Self-Management:
Developing a mobile application that offers resources and tools for patients to manage their mental health conditions during their hospital stay. This mobile app empowers patients to take an active role in their mental health care by providing access to self-help resources, coping strategies, and information (Knaak et al., 2017). It supports patients in managing their mental health alongside their physical recovery.
IV. Operationalization of the Project
A. Key Stakeholders
1. Patients - Patients will actively participate in their own care and have access to educational materials and self-management tools.
2. Healthcare Providers - Medical and mental health professionals will receive training and guidance to improve their competency in managing behavioral health and mental health issues.
3. Support Staff - Support staff will be educated about the importance of holistic care and how to assist in the implementation of new protocols (Sovold et al., 2021).
4. IT Department - The IT department will be involved in integrating mental health assessment tools into the electronic health record system and implementing telehealth solutions.
5. Management Team - The management team will support the project's advocacy efforts, allocate resources, and ensure the compliance of updated protocols.
V. Conclusion
This project aims to create a comprehensive strategy for managing behavioral health and mental health illnesses in a med/surgical unit. By combining educational initiatives, policy changes, and technology integration, we aim to improve patient outcomes and provide holistic care to individuals with co-existing physical and mental health conditions. As the project progresses, the methodology will be further refined to ensure its effectiveness and sustainability.
