SEARCHING AND APPRAISING LITERATURE
When conducting a literature review, what are the steps you should you take to successfully search the evidence? Once you have generated your results, how do you properly appraise the evidence, grade them, and select the ones you want to use?
When conducting a literature review, the goal is to produce a set of results that match your search criteria. The results you get will vary dramatically depending on the search engine(s) you utilize and which key words you choose to enter. Selecting the right database(s) is one skill; selecting the best key words is another. In this Assignment, you will hone your skills in both of these important aspects of the search process.
Keep in mind, the results of your search will vary in terms of quality, as well as appropriateness, and significance to your research goals. For this reason, searching is only the first step of the process. The second step is to appraise the results you identified, and based on your evaluations, select the literature that you will select.
TO PREPARE:
· Review the Learning Resources for this week which focus on how to successfully search and appraise search results.
· Review the course textbook Appendices E, F, and G, located in the Learning Resources for this week, which you will be required to complete and submit as part of this Assignment.
· Select one organizational type and one gap in practice or practice change on which to focus for this Assignment. Note: You may select a new organizational type and gap in practice or practice change or, if you choose, you may reuse one on which you focused for a previous Assignment, Discussion, or Blog in this course. Also Note: These may or may not be the same organizational type and gap in practice or practice change as those you will focus on for your Practicum and DNP Project.
· Consider all of the factors you should take into account when searching the evidence, then, using the Walden Library databases, conduct a search related to the organizational type and gap in practice or practice change you selected.
· Consider all of the factors you should take into account when apprising evidence, then, using the course text Appendices E, F, and G, appraise the results of your search.
· Based on your appraisals, identify the three recent (within the last five years), peer-reviewed articles that you think are most relevant to your research goals. Note: For this Assignment, you must complete Appendix G based on having completed either Appendix E or F for each of the three articles you selected, as appropriate. You will submit a total of five documents (four completed Appendices along with your 2–3-page paper).

Organizational Type and Gap in Practice or Practice Change
An outpatient Parkinson's neurology clinic was selected for this investigation. Progressive neurological patients get long-term care, therapeutic monitoring, medication management, and patient education in these outpatient clinics. Health care specialists such as neurologists, nurse practitioners, therapists, and case managers support disease management in such settings. PD patients structured self-management therapy, such as self-efficacy, behavioral adaptation, and comprehensive non-motor symptom support, is inconsistently integrated. Evidence-based self-management treatments are increasingly recognized as essential for chronic illness care, yet many outpatient clinics do not implement them or provide the necessary components. This gap is driven by a lack of consensus and clarity over which PD self-management components perform best. The search was thus to identify contemporary, high-quality, peer-reviewed literature that examines the major components and effects of Parkinson's disease self-management therapies, concentrating on self-efficacy, digital health tools, and randomized controlled trials.
Search Process
Strategy ensured a comprehensive and focused literature search. To search the Walden Library's electronic resources, access to multiple academic databases was employed. Scopus and CINAHL were selected as databases. These databases were chosen because they encompass qualitative and quantitative research, systematic reviews, and peer-reviewed journal publications on evidence-based nursing and healthcare practice. PubMed was selected for its extensive biomedical and biological sciences collection, including Parkinson's disease studies. CINAHL was chosen for its nursing and allied health emphasis, beneficial for discovering nurse-led practice articles. Scrubs were employed for technology, public health, and clinical evidence.
The keyword selection process was guided by the research question and gap in practice. The following key search terms and Boolean operators were used:
· “Parkinson’s disease” AND “self-management”
· “Self-efficacy” AND “Parkinson’s”
· “Digital health” AND “Parkinson’s disease” AND “self-management”
· “Intervention” AND “self-management” AND “Parkinson’s”
· “Self-care” OR “self-management” AND “chronic illness” AND “Parkinson’s”
· “RCT” OR “randomized controlled trial” AND “Parkinson’s” AND “self-management”
Filters limited the search to peer-reviewed international research on adult populations published between 2020 and 2025 in English. Leaving conference papers and editorial comments out emphasized original research and systematic reviews. It was necessary to narrow thousands of articles to a manageable number. Searching the databases found 43 articles. We reviewed 17 full-text studies after removing duplicates and screening titles and abstracts for Parkinson's disease self-management. Parkinson’s disease self-management or self-efficacy study coordinated digital or behavioral therapies, and quality of life, motor/non-motor symptoms, or patient empowerment findings.
Evaluation of Evidence
According to Appendices E, F, and G of the course textbook (which I will complete and submit later), article quality assessment needed methodical and critical examination. The appendices provide a systematic approach to evidence trustworthiness, applicability, and methodological rigor. Transparency, sampling, triangulation, topic saturation, and ethics were evaluated in qualitative and mixed-methods research. RCT, cohort, sample size, intervention fidelity, statistical significance, and practical relevance were rigorously reviewed for quantitative research and reviews. The most relevant, recent, and peer-reviewed full-text studies on the practice gap and organizational focus were three of 17. These were:
1. Armstrong et al. (2024) – a mixed-methods synthesis combining qualitative research with a systematic review of RCTs, identifying 15 essential self-management components and their correlation with improved outcomes.
2. Hall et al. (2025) – a scoping review examining the role of digital health technologies in enhancing self-efficacy in PD patients.
3. Milne-Ives et al. (2022) – a scoping review that evaluates self-management interventions in PD and identifies gaps, such as insufficient focus on non-motor symptoms and holistic care.
These three studies were selected because they were published within five years, focused on Parkinson's disease, addressed self-management (intervention, digital health, or self-efficacy), and employed strong analytic methodologies. They give triangulated evidence via mixed-methods synthesis, scoping reviews, and qualitative and quantitative analyses.
Armstrong et al.'s (2024) mixed-methods synthesis of qualitative experiences and 18 RCT cross-analysis was helpful. The finding that more successful self-management treatments comprised at least four of the 15 components was convincing and provided a platform for intervention design and assessment. The technical perspective was supplied by Hall et al. (2025). Understanding how digital health tools impact self-efficacy is vital as outpatient neurology employs them increasingly. Although the study was early, it was shown that multimodal digital tools (such as wearables and activity trackers) may boost self-efficacy for falls, physical activity, and monitoring.
Milne-Ives et al. (2022) evaluated the literature on self-management and found that, despite the efficacy of numerous interventions, mental health was prioritized above motor symptoms. Self-management programs for holistic therapy should be expanded, this article said. All three articles were graded based on evidence, methodological quality, and applicability to the selected organizational setting and practice gap using a modified version of the GRADE system (Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations) and Johns Hopkins Evidence Appraisal Tools. Armstrong et al. (2024) was Level I evidence (mixed-methods synthesis including RCTs), and Hall et al. (2025) and Milne-Ives (2022) were Level V (scoping reviews of empirical research), but they were still excellent in insight and synthesis. After these comprehensive reviews, the last three articles provided the best evidence for outpatient Parkinson's disease self-management program changes.
Conclusion
High-quality literature reviews need more than finding articles to describe a clinical condition, identify relevant databases, carefully choose key phrases, and critically assess evidence for rigor and relevance. This search approach was driven by the outpatient neurology clinic practice gap, the Parkinson's disease self-management program limit, and unequal use. The research examined three peer-reviewed articles on PD self-management techniques to expand the evidence base. Armstrong et al. (2024) underlined the need for multiple components since RCTs revealed that self-management interventions with a larger basis were more effective. Clinics considering technology may benefit from Hall et al. (2025) on digital health and self-efficacy. Finally, Milne-Ives et al. (2022) addressed emotional well-being and cost-effective therapies and gaps. These articles support clinical decision-making and outpatient implementation of evidence-based, comprehensive Parkinson's disease self-management approaches. Making fragmented therapy more structured and empowered may increase patient autonomy, symptom control, and quality of life.
