RUA: Analyzing Published Research: Mindfulness Interventions for Chronic Pain in Older Adults
Clinical Question: Problem
It is common to hear the aging adult population complain of pain that they have been suffering from for over six months. This is known as chronic pain and many older adults suffer from it. Many think pharmaceutical therapy is the only treatment for chronic pain. Older adults can become reliant on prescription medications to treat and manage their pain. Some older adults are not even aware of other treatment options available for chronic pain management. My groups goal is to bring awareness to various mindfulness techniques and the factors to contribute to the success of mindfulness techniques and chronic pain in aging adults. Research has been conducted to determine the relationship between non-pharmacological therapies and patient compliancy (Ankawi et al., 2019). Older adults ranging from ages 65-84 account for 28% of the chronic pain population, 34% of that population are 85 years old and older (Arnstein et al., 2023). The desire to find relief from chronic pain has made individuals desperate to try various methods including mindfulness interventions. Mindfulness interventions can have a positive effect on the aging population and their chronic pain and when exposed to alternatives individuals may no longer have to rely on pharmaceuticals as their first choice for relief. Using our PICOT question that we formulated from week 3’s RUA, this paper will discuss the positive effects of mindfulness for chronic pain: “In older adults experiencing chronic pain how does the implementation of mindfulness based interventions compare to the standard pain management techniques affect pain intensity, functional ability, and quality of life within a period of six months?”.

Synthesis of Literature: Description of Findings
Variables
The first article (Ankawi et al., 2019) focuses on how beliefs, motivation and behaviors (dependent varibles) influence the older adult population when considering or adhering to non-pharmacological interventions for chronic pain management (independent variable). The second article provided a more in depth viewpoint of self-motivation of the patient and the family’s support to pain management (independent variable). The second article (Arnstein et al., 2023) also used numerical data to back up the findings, which further proved the point that having a support system aids in the management of health.
Methods
In the comparison of the two articles the first article in the data table used a qualitative approach to their research and the second article used a mixed method. The first article included a ethnography strategy which included observing the factors that contribute to client adherence. The second article collected data from scholarly sources, focus groups and observation of the targeted population.
Participants
The participants used for the first article were 86 American participants who suffered from chronic pain. The remainder of the data came from scholarly articles. The second article has data collected from scholarly resources and a focus group of an undisclosed number that are caregivers and nurses. The second articles participants were American residents who care for the older adult population.
Instruments
The first article used data collected from various peer reviewed scholarly resources. They combined this information and used data from scholarly article to provide percentages. This shows validity and reliability because they used peer reviewed articles and implemented data collected that is bias free and supports the purpose and motive of the article. The first article also used PSOCQ score technique which is the “Pain score of Change Questionnaire”. The second article used data from a treatment log response which allows researchers to investigate the trends of chronic pain management. Communication from caregivers in the focus groups was also used in the article.
Implications for Future Work
The research findings support my PICOT question and clinical problem because they provide multiple factors that can contribute to the overall effectiveness of mindfulness interventions. Including variables in the research that can affect the outcome of non-pharmacological interventions gives reasoning behind why some may be opposed to mindfulness interventions. Adherence to the mindfulness interventions is key when determining the effectiveness. Family support also has a huge influencing factor because they are a part of the daily regimen in the client’s life, if they believe in the mindfulness interventions then they can have a great impact on the client and their chronic pain management. Two questions that I believe would my groups work would be: How long does a client have to practice mindfulness interventions in order to see a positive effect in chronic pain? Do mindfulness interventions treat the mind or physical pain experienced by the client?
Conclusion
The purpose of this paper was to dissect the articles used and determine if they support my groups PICOT question. After a thorough evaluation of the two articles used it has been determined that they do indeed support my question by providing data from scholarly articles, focus groups and questionnaires. Mindfulness interventions can help older adults manage their chronic pain without the dependency of pharmaceuticals. With the help and education of mindfulness interventions we can help relieve individuals of their chronic pain by giving them multiple ways to find relief.
