  • Use the 5 senses: taste, touch, smell, sound, sight
  • Use similies
  • Use metaphors
  • Use transitions
  • Include dialogue
  • Experiment with point of view: you can use first person, second person, third person
  • Use flashbacks
  • Use foreshadowing
  • Use repetition of certain words or lines to create an effect
  • Incorporate themes and explore those themes within your essay
  • If you feel uncomfortable using people’s real names, you can change them
  • Paint a picture for the reader: use a lot of setting, colors, describe where we are in terms of location (an office, house, school, etc.)
  • Make sure you have a point: in other words, why are you writing this essay and why should we care?
  • Use different tenses, but be consistent. Present or past is the norm.
  • Build up suspense, don't give away the point of the story all at once.
