Journal article Summary Assignment Instructions
Overview
As graduate students, it is an important skill to be able to read and understand original research. This assignment will help you learn to identify and explain sections of a journal article. This assignment is also important as precursory work for your research paper where you will be required to read and utilize journal article references.
Instructions
You will be completing a Journal Article Summary related to the topic of childhood resilience. Resilience is the ability to positively adapt to change or recover from negative experiences (McCartney & Phillips, 2006). For this assignment, you will choose an article to review related to the topic of childhood resilience. The article you select must be a peer-reviewed journal article as well as a primary source, meaning that the authors are discussing their own research, not others’ research (e.g., review articles or meta-analysis). If you use an article that does not meet these criteria, you will not receive credit for this assignment. The Jerry Falwell Library, which is linked in the Resources section, is a reliable place to conduct your search for journal article references. Some of the databases have the option to select “peer-reviewed” sources; selecting this option will help you eliminate non-scholarly sources from your search results. You do not need to pay for articles. Articles that ask you to pay for access can generally be accessed through the Jerry Falwell Library without requiring payment.
After you’ve reviewed the article, you will complete the 6 questions on the Journal Article Summary Template based on the information from the article. See the example below for detailed explanation of the required material for each question on the Journal Article Summary Template. Submit the completed form and the PDF form of the article being reviewed. All material must be in current APA format. Be sure to review the criteria on the Journal Article Summary Grading Rubric before beginning this assignment.

Journal Article Summary Template
Answer the following 6 questions completely.
1. Current APA reference of article being reviewed.
Write the reference for the article as if it were in the reference section of your paper.
2. What is the purpose of the research being conducted?
Provide the “why” behind the paper. Why have they conducted the experiment? For example, “These experiments were designed to explore the relationship between maltreatment in childhood and later college adjustment.”
3. What is the research question?
The research question is more specific. What is the specific question or questions the article will answer as a result of the study or experiment? For example, “What role does gender play in the relationship between childhood maltreatment and college adjustment?”
4. What is the research design (i.e., between or within subjects, what type of statistical tests were used, what were the levels of each variable)?
This information will be in the methods section of your paper. Be sure to provide enough detail to describe how the study was designed.
5. Were the results significant (be specific)? Do these support or not support the hypothesis?
Describe the results in your own words. For example: Group X demonstrated more protective factors than Group Y. This finding supports the hypothesis that manipulation of Y would decrease resiliency.
6. What limitations are mentioned?
Limitations can be found in the discussion section of the paper. If a limitation is that they didn’t have X control group, then explain in your own words why that is important. Does it change the interpretation of the findings?
