Introduction paragraph:
Have you ever been sick and know that you needed to see the doctor but just felt far too bad to drive there safely? Telemedicine has made great advancements in making things like this possible. Maybe you live paycheck to paycheck, and you just don’t have the extra money for the gas to make it to the office and see your provider. Maybe it is that just an office visit is so expensive that you can’t afford the co pay with insurance. Although we endured many terrible things from the pandemic in 2020, we also laid claims on advancement in the medical field. With telemedicine you can see and speak right to your health care provider from the comfort of your own home. Many would say that telemedicine is a great advancement in the medical field because there is no need for transportation, it is more cost effective for the patient and the insurance companies, and it increases compliance with care.
Outline:
I. Supporting Point 1: There is no need for transportation for telemedicine appointments
A. Topic sentence: Many people in the United States have limited access to a reliable vehicle and rely heavily on others to take them to appointments.
B. Supporting detail: Owning a vehicle takes a lot of money when you think about it, you need insurance, taxes and a driver’s license.
C. Supporting detail: When taking part in telemedicine appointments there is no need to have reliable transportation because appointments can be completed from the comfort of your own home.
II. Supporting Point 2: Telemedicine is a cheaper alternative
A. Topic sentence: Telemedicine is a cheaper alternative to the patient due to not needing transportation as well as being billed differently with insurance companies.
B. Supporting detail: Since the pandemic we learned that not only is telemedicine cheaper for the patient, but it is also billed differently from insurance companies, and it qualifies for a cheaper co pay and out-of-pocket cost for the patient.
C. Supporting detail: The sustainability of telemedicine is in the hands of Medicare or Medicaid post pandemic.
III. Supporting Point 3: Telemedicine makes patient compliance easier than in person.
A. Topic sentence: Patients have been much more compliant with keeping their appointments when you do not have to choose between work and your health.
B. Supporting detail: Visits can be completed from any where at any time, therefore it makes it easier for the working parent or the disabled patient to keep their appointments current.
C. Supporting detail: research and data have proven that the use of telemedicine has improved patient compliance with keeping appointments.
IV. Countering Opposing Perspectives
A. Topic sentence: Some people have argued that due to the decrease in cost for a patient to be seen virtually from both the office and insurance they are concerned that it could cause many providers to in turn earn less money.
B. Supporting detail: Some argue that telemedicine visits are not as effective due to the pt not having the face-to-face experience and could cause something to be missed by not being present in front of the provider.
C. Refuting detail: the benefits of telemedicine far outweigh the difficulties that some believe that it causes.
V. Conclusion
A. Review central ideas presented in body and make connection to thesis: It is clear from the research that eliminating the possibility of virtual visits for many patients who benefit from them would be cruel. Although the pandemic brought many changes to us this one is very beneficial in multiple ways including cost and the increase in health benefits.
B. Closing thoughts: Telehealth is a very important advancement in the health care field, by depleting this source could affect the health of many people. This is a step in the right direction to making healthcare more accessible to those in need. [Example: Climate change is a serious, global challenge affecting all of humankind, and every step toward the transition to electric vehicles is a step in the right direction.]
