If we look to non-violent protests, a clear pattern emerges: non-violent protests against nations with democratic institutions (America, South Africa, Britain) have all had varying levels of success, but such protests in totalitarian nations have failed to achieve their ends in the face of brutality and repression

. 

If we take peace seriously as a solution or alternative to violence when rights are violated, can it succeed where there is no protection for basic individual or human rights? Why or why not?
