Educational change is a complex process of initiation, implementation, and continuation. All three processes require meticulous planning and a sense of commitment by all stakeholders (Fullan, 2016). Initiation starts when the need to address an identified issue is recognized. This phase has to do with data collection regarding the nature, assessing available resources, and engaging stakeholders such as educators, administrators, and members of the community in putting together an effective plan of action. Without proper backing at this stage, one would meet challenges to implementation in the future.
Implementation is a phase when strategies have to be put into effect. This was also the stage when constant monitoring should have taken place to see if there are any changes that have been put in effect on the ground. Difficulties encountered here may include resistance, lack of resources, and vague expectations. Ready implementation requires the support and training of the ongoing processes while allowing adjustments to suit the needs of the organization.
Continual support helps ensure that changes are going to become embedded in the system. Otherwise, with disappearing funds or rotating leadership, policies are easily forgotten. For change to be meaningful, it requires articulation, consideration of flexibility, and most importantly, continuous professional development to ensure the growth of change. (Fullan, 2016)
