Physical Health Issue

            For this week’s discussion post I educated myself on the issue of smoking and how smoking can impact physical health. According to Helgeson (2017) “smoking has been referred to as the single most preventable cause of death”(p.456).  Smoking is linked to various types of cancer and even heart disease.  People of all ages engage in smoking and many often face multiple physical health consequences. According to Helgeson (2017) “smoking is a major cause of stroke and emphysema, and a contributor to at least 15 different types of cancer”(p.456).

            Many people continue to believe smoking is often associated with other physical or mental health issues, such as anxiety or depression.  People who smoke are often utilizing it as a coping skill to help themselves overcome another internal issue they may be experiencing.  According to Helgeson (2017) “people with a history of depression or anxiety disorders are more likely to smoke than people without histories”(p.459).

Similarities and Differences Among Genders

 Research has shown both genders have similarities and differences when it comes to smoking.  Women are more likely to experience depression, which is linked to a higher smoking rate for women. According to Helgeson (2017) “the relation of smoking to depression is stronger among women than men”(p.459).  Men tend to be more physically addicted to smoking than women, but women often fear quitting smoking because of potential weight gain. According to Helgeson (2017) “women around the world are more likely than men to say they smoke to suppress their appetite”(p.459).
