1. Within The first year of launching, 275,000 pounds of food were handed out to people in need. Word of the food bank’s success quickly spread, and states began to take note of what was going on. By the year 1977, food banks had been established in 18 different cities across the United States. As the number of food banks began to grow, van Hengel created a national organization for food banks. Later on in 1979 he established Second Harvest (“Feeding America”, n.d.). This was called America’s Second Harvest the Nation’s Food Bank Network. Fast forward

to the year 2008, the network adopted the name Feeding America to better fit the mission of the organization. Today, Feeding America is known to be the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization (“Feeding America”, n.d.). The network has 200 food banks across the country. As the need for food rates hold steady at the highest levels ever, the Feeding America network of food banks has risen to meet the need. The organization feeds 40 million people at risk of hunger. That number includes 12 million children and 7 million seniors (“Feeding America”, n.d.). However the need for food will continue to rise. Sadly due to the Covid-19 the need has gone up. Many people are out of jobs. Some students go to school Monday –Friday and could count on having two meals they might not typically get at home. The numbers aren’t always going to be accurate. Therefore there is a need to get as much help as possible. Individuals who experience food insecurity are more likely to have poorer health, and to have diet-related conditions like diabetes. An estimated 5.5 million seniors age 60 and older are food insecure, as are 4.8 million adults age 50-59. Many seniors regularly face challenges accessing food due to mobility and transportation limitations, and with social distancing .

Funding Sources

Flagler Health Plus and its Foundation receive financial and in-kind endowments from local businesses and philanthropists; the organization’s 2018 annual report has provided a philanthropic review and listed several significant donations. For instance, a local architectural firm titled the Stellar Foundation donated $100,000 in 2017 to assist with hospital maintenance and technology improvements (Flagler Foundation, 2018).  Another endowment was provided by the Regency Electric Company, which subsidized $115,000 to the Foundation’s General Fund. In addition, several local residents have provided in-kind transfers, such as real estate, vehicles, etc...

However, the most significant donation was provided in 2019 by The Players Championship. According to Mangus (2019), “In response to the growing behavioral health needs affecting youth in St. Johns County, THE PLAYERS Championship has committed $1 million to the Flagler Healthcare Foundation to help bolster the work being led by Flagler Health+ in St. Johns County public schools” (para. 1). This endowment has provided financial assistance to reduce teen depression and suicide in St. Johns County. Regrettably, St. Johns County has the highest suicide rate for children between the ages of 18-24 years of age (Mangus, 2019).  Kiersz and Akhtar (2019) emphasized that “young people are dying from suicide at record rates. The suicide rate among people aged 10 to 24 increased 56% between 2007 and 2017, according to a new report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention” (para. 1).

Organizational Programs

In St. Johns County, limited support and care availability have been correlated to the community’s teen behavioral issue. Therefore, Flagler Health Plus has publically declared its commitment to reduce behavioral health issues amongst youths in St. Johns County by starting the Be Resilient and Voice Emotions (BRAVE) Program. This initiative will encourage youth to seek behavioral health care services when they need them and work to address social barriers to such care. This program has established a crisis hotline, which provides teens with 24-hour access to licensed mental health counselors.

Organizational Needs

St. Johns County is growing at an exponential rate. According to the St. Augustine Record, St. Johns County is the 6th fastest growing county in the state of Florida (Basch, 2019); thus, more adolescents are moving into the community every day. As a result, the (BRAVE) program will require additional funding to make a notable impact. In my opinion, this area of service provision could be enhanced with future endowments.
