Conducting a literature review not only entails groping for relevant articles or sources around a research problem or topic, but also involves summarizing, and synthesizing or integrating them (Creswell & Creswell, 2023). Oftentimes, the challenge is what kind of literature to include to help both the researcher and reader understand their relationships with the research problem. Therefore, mapping out a research issue gives a visual representation of what the researcher intends to capture in the review to provide a comprehensive picture of their connections with the study issue. Drawing up a mind map also helps simplify the process of building a good literature review in a coherent manner. Figure 1 illustrates a mind map of the main theme and subthemes to support my problem.
In reference to Figure 1, executive compensation is my central research problem with four main broad themes: disclosure transparency, disclosure regulations, firm performance measures, and CEO pay-performance sensitivity. These broad topics have further uniquely separate subthemes. The subtopics of disclosure transparency include directors’ remuneration and performance measures, implying that I will review the literature on disclosure transparency. Also, for disclosure regulations, I will deliberate on regulatory events leading to the Security and Exchange Commission’s proposed and final amendments on executive pay disclosure, which in turn constitute the background of compensation disclosure rules. Equally, firm performance measures will include the discussion on market-based and accounting-based measures of firm performance. Finally, for the CEO pay-performance sensitivity, I will adopt the Agency Theory of Jensen and Meckling (1976) to explain the relationship between executive compensation and firm financial performance to see the impact of the SEC’s recent executive pay disclosure policy on linking CEO pay to firm performance.
Regarding the potential limitations of my exploration, I will say that time is a limiting factor. Being my first time conducting such an intense doctoral project, it might take me some time to extract and put information together especially collecting data for my study. Another limitation may be the volume of articles that I need to extract, read, summarize, and synthesize for my literature review. Putting the ideas from various relevant articles, such as peer-reviewed ones requires that you have timelines and adhere to them as well as meet your dissertation committee’s expectations. All in all, it is essential to have a framework and flow that relates the literature to the research problem you seeking to address to support and provide a background perspective to your study.
Response two
The concept in mapping this out is to understand the different connection points which impact work performance across two different global regions (United States and India). The goal is to help understand how work performance might be impacted by domicile, culture, personality, training, compensation, and other factors, ultimately with a focus on hiring and retaining quality team members who are positioned to be successful.
As the focus has shifted towards increased visibility in Diversity and Inclusion, many organizations are realizing that this is a much broader topic than previously considered, and organizational culture and leadership is becoming increasingly important. The National Center for Biotechnology shares that this may be plotted on a quadrant map, with four distinct models of optimum performance (Brannan, 2023). By understanding how individuals may fit into the organizational, hiring managers and other leaders might better develop a model for hiring and retaining talent.
While some organizations leverage personality for performance evaluation as part of their recruiting process, it has typically been done with an eye on desirable vs undesirable traits, such as honesty or tendencies towards violence, however, only rarely is it done with the goal of allowing the team dynamic to grow or develop, or for leaders of people to lead better (Stabile, 2022).
As the leader of a team which is comprised of global team members, I find that there is an interesting dynamic between our employees, and our team has been together for some time. As it's a topic of both personal and professional interest for me, this map is useful in building a visual representation of how I might refine documents and artifacts for reference.
