A more sophisticated understanding is obtained when choosing which behavior to target for reduction and seeing it as "contextually inappropriate behavior" (CIB) as opposed to categorizing it as essentially good or harmful. In a sports arena, for instance, talking loudly is probably OK and even encouraged; nevertheless, in a library, the same conduct is disruptive. This viewpoint emphasizes how actions can have multiple purposes depending on the circumstances, and that something that might be undesirable in one setting may be appropriate or even beneficial in another. Knowing this, behavior analysts concentrate on the situational background of the behavior as well as the particulars that render it unsuitable or maladaptive. This method emphasizes how crucial it is to consider situational needs, cultural norms, and the environment when evaluating behaviors that need to be addressed. By doing this, interventions can be created that, instead of just repressing a behavior without taking into account its functional purpose, teach substitute behaviors that are more appropriate for the particular environment. Making a significant and long-lasting change in behavior requires this functional and contextual awareness.
