Research proposal/outline (10% of the course grade) (1 page)
Students should submit a one-page research proposal explaining their topic
and research questions. The proposal should include preliminary
expectations/hypotheses, refined research question, literature review, and an annotated bibliography. The research papers should be based on credible academic sources (read: not Wikipedia) and you need to follow a consistent and proper citation system. Student are also expected to present their topic briefly in class on the day of proposal submission.
Final Research Papers (30 % of the course grade) ( 5 pages)
Students are expected to write a short research paper ( 5 pages) on a topic of their own choosing. The paper should be focusing on one aspect of Middle East or Arab history, society, and/or culture. Your paper should be coherent, making a specific thesis, with supporting arguments and evidence. Few examples of research topics are Shia culture in Iraq, Islamic feminist organizations in Morocco, Arab film industry in Beirut/Lebanon, protest culture in Egypt, social media in Saudi Arabia, hip-hop culture in Tunisia. Alternatively, students may pick a broader topic that would look at the entire region, for example, “the influence of Al- Jazeera in the Arab speaking world,” “the development of Arab poetry in historical perspective,” or “the rise of tele-evangelicals in Arab world.” Comparative analysis of the two countries are also welcome such as “everyday practices of Shia culture in Lebanon and Iraq” or “birth control in the Gulf and the North Africa.” Contemplating on the required readings can be a good starting point to crystallize your Research question.
