Research in our culture
Find a report about a research study that has been shared with the world. You can uaually find these on any news site, social media sites or even in the news paper. Headlines will usually read "Recent study shows....." Try to decipher what the original study was about and report your analysis by answering the questions below. Be a skeptic and ask yourself questions about the information being presented.
1. Is there enough information for you to be able to locate the original article? If not, tell us what you know about the original article.
2. What type of study is it? Qualitative vs Quantitative? Survey research? Case Study? Natural or Lab observation? What can you tell us about the method of the study?
3. How does the reporter or author of the news article summarize the original study? What are they saying is the take-away message here?
4. Does the take-away message actually represent the study? Why or why not?
5. Any additional comments?
