Research Essay

Project Two: The Research Essay (about 3500 total words) 

Human knowledge is unfinished, still developing, and full of problems that need to be addressed by your generation. This assignment is an opportunity for you to create your own ideas in conversation with a larger field of expertise. To make the most of this opportunity, you should choose your topic in accordance with your own interests, passions, and intellectual preoccupations. You may write on any topic of your choosing as long as it is related in some way to the course materials. You must meet with me to discuss your topic before beginning the composition process. Before final submission, this project will pass through several phases of development, each designed to draw attention to the various components and processes of a successful research paper:

The Research Proposal (300 words): consider an initial question; identify what to research and why; sketch out potential deficiencies or gaps in your knowledge that require correction or supplementation; preliminary sources listed.

The Research in Progress Report (500 words): statement of the final research question that takes preliminary investigation of sources into consideration; statement of difficulties or problems related to argument, information, or information retrieval; steps taken to correct these problems; list of final sources.

Annotated Bibliography (500-1000 words): write brief synopses of each of your eight sources

First Draft (at least 1,000 words): include a brief preface that explains what you think you did successfully, what you think you did unsuccessfully, and why.

Second Draft (at least 2,000 words): include a brief preface that explains what you think you did successfully, what you think you did unsuccessfully, and why.

Final Draft (2,000 polished words, the completed form of your thinking): include a brief preface that explains what you think you did successfully, what you think you did unsuccessfully, and why.
