3.3 Discussion. Big Picture of Happiness
Getting Started
Research about positive psychology has been exploding in the last decade or so. One of the more popular areas of study has been the construct of happiness. Because work takes the most amount of time from a person’s life—next to family—it is important for psychologists to have a foundation of happiness and well-being as they relate to careers and work situations. You will be a more effective life coach or I/O psychologist by having a sound and comprehensive understanding of the emotion of happiness, especially as it relates to work situations.
Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:
· Evaluate happiness in relation to themes and life coaching.
Background Information
For this discussion, you will find a meta-analysis research article to provide a big-picture perspective on happiness. Then, you will discuss themes and concepts related to happiness, as well as how you would apply them to a life coaching scenario. Finally, you will identify questions that you have about happiness and life coaching for your peers to respond to.
Instructions
1. Read Chapter 8, “Taking Positive Psychology to the Workplace: Positive Organizational Psychology, Positive Organizational Behavior, and Positive Organizational Scholarship,” (new tab) in your textbook Scientific Advances in Positive Psychology.
2. Locate a meta-analysis research article on happiness. After reading it, along with the assigned textbook chapter, navigate to the discussion topic and respond to the following discussion prompts:
a. How do various themes, concepts, and discoveries fit together to provide the big picture of happiness?
b. As a life coach, how would you apply what you have learned about happiness to a client?
c. What questions do you have about happiness and life coaching?
3. Your initial post:
a. Should be between 400 to 500 words.
b. Be well developed by providing clear answers with evidence of critical thinking.
c. Add greater depth to the discussion by introducing new ideas.

3.1 Discussion. My Jealous God
Getting Started
With regard to the Lord’s Ten Commandments, let us begin at the beginning, with a “jealous” God. Many of us have been taught from a young age that it isn’t good to be jealous. We should be grateful for what we have and not be jealous or envious of anyone else.
However, the Ten Commandments were originally written in Hebrew. In the Hebrew language, the word “qanna” means to be jealous only with respect to God—and only in these two ways: to punish those who hate God and to demand exclusive service to the Living God. Thus, God is jealous in that He commands us to love Him and to serve Him exclusively.
How would serving a jealous God be good for us? How would serving a jealous God bring us greater happiness and well-being?
Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:
· Describe what the term “jealousy” means to you.
· Share an experience in which being jealous was beneficial for you.
· Contrast the English and Hebrew definitions of the word “jealous.”
Background Information
Upon a closer examination of the very first commandment—Thou shalt have no other gods before Me—we quickly realize that having a single focus on our living God is what He expects and even commands from us. We are to love Him and to serve Him with a single-mindedness that few have been able to enjoy. When we focus on God, His sovereignty, His power, His all-encompassing but fierce love for us, then the small things (and sometimes even the big things) in life get put back into perspective. The overwhelming things of this world shrink to a manageable size and life itself becomes not only “do-able” but joyful.
Now let’s consider some of the basic foundational concepts from a positive psychological standpoint. We learn that having a positive attitude, a hopeful mindset, and a sense of contentment in the present all play large roles in increasing well-being, flourishing, and even having the “good life.” What if we were to take all of this to the furthest extent of our being? What if we not only had “positive attitudes,” but we also loved God with all of our hearts? What if we not only had a sense of contentment in the present, but we also served God joyfully in all of our circumstances? Thus, it would appear that having a jealous God who commands us to love Him and to serve Him exclusively would bring about a joy few have ever known!
With God’s great commandments, simple “optimism” becomes transformative love and loyalty. By following God’s great commandments, simple “contentment with present circumstances” becomes overflowing joy in every situation. This is the power and the glory of God’s first commandment: Have no other gods before Me. He commands us to love Him and to obey Him with all of our hearts. Not because He needs us to love Him, but because we need for us to love Him.
