Research Topic, Objective/Purpose, and Research Question(s)
1. Research Topic: LGBTQ and Homelessness
2. Objective/Purpose: To explore the unique challenges and experiences LGBTQ individuals face in the context of homelessness.
3. Research Questions:
a) What are the specific factors contributing to homelessness among LGBTQ individuals?
b) How does the experience of homelessness differ for LGBTQ individuals compared to the general population?
c) What support systems or interventions are effective in addressing the needs of LGBTQ individuals experiencing homelessness?
2. Dependent and Independent Variables: Dependent Variables:
· Level of homelessness (measured by the duration and severity of homelessness)
· Psychological well-being (measured by self-reported mental health)
· Access to support services (measured by utilization of available resources)
Independent Variables:
· Sexual orientation and gender identity
· Social support systems
· Discrimination and stigma
· Access to LGBTQ-friendly services
3. Null and Alternate Hypotheses: Null Hypotheses
a) There is no significant difference between the causes of homelessness that affect LGBTQ and non-LGBTQ people.
b) The experience of homelessness among members of the LGBTQ community is not significantly different from that of the general population.
c) LGBTQ-friendly support networks do not significantly impact the wellbeing of LGBTQ people who are homeless.
Alternate Hypotheses:
a) There is a significant difference between LGBTQ and non-LGBTQ people in the causes that lead to homelessness.
b) The experience of homelessness is significantly different for LGBTQ people than for the general population.
c) LGBTQ-friendly support networks have a significantly positive impact on the wellbeing of homeless LGBTQ people.
4. Qualitative Methods:
a) In-depth Interviews:
· Conducting in-depth interviews with LGBTQ people who have experienced homelessness can offer rich, personal narratives to comprehend the subtleties of their experiences.
b) Focus Groups:
· Focus groups enable a collaborative exploration of common experiences, offering insights into shared problems and possible solutions.
c) Content Analysis of Narratives:
· Examining narratives that have been written down or documented, like diaries or personal stories, can highlight recurrent themes and feelings associated with LGBTQ homelessness.
5. Most Appropriate Method:
In-depth interviews would be the most suitable qualitative method. The complex issues of LGBTQ homelessness are conveyed through the in-depth examination of personal experiences made possible by these interviews. A deeper knowledge of the causes of homelessness, the specific challenges encountered, and the impact of support networks is made possible by the one-on-one format of the interviews.
6. Advantages and Disadvantages of In-Depth Interviews: Advantages:
· Rich Data: Detailed and nuanced information obtained through in-depth interviews enables a thorough comprehension of each person's unique experiences.
· Flexibility: The interviewer can modify questions in reaction to the candidate's answers, exploring unanticipated but pertinent topics.
· Personal Connection: Establishing a rapport with the interviewer can result in responses that are more genuine and forthcoming.
Disadvantages:
· Resource-Intensive: In-depth interviews can be resource-intensive due to their time-consuming nature and need for skilled interviewers.
· Subjectivity: Different researchers may interpret qualitative data in different ways due to subjectivity.
· Limited Generalizability: Because of the limited sample size and the uniqueness of each person's experience, conclusions drawn from in-depth interviews might not apply to the LGBTQ homeless community.
In conclusion, the best qualitative technique for examining the research issue of LGBTQ people and homelessness is in-depth interviews. Although it requires a lot of resources, the amount of knowledge and the richness of the data exceed the drawbacks, providing important insights into the real-life experiences of LGBTQ people who are homeless.
