Kawasaki disease is an inflammatory disease that can damage a child's coronary arteries, which carry blood to the heart. It is an acute febrile illness that affects children younger than 5 years. The clinical signs of the disease include fever, rash, swelling of the hands and feet, redness of the eyes, swollen lymph glands in the neck and irritation and inflammation of the mouth, lips and throat. The disease can be treated with intravenous immunoglobulin and aspirin decreases development of the coronary artery abnormalities. Parents should be aware that early treatment can help lower the risk of lasting effects( CDC, n.d).
