1. What is your name Sheena Mae Soriano 2. Can you tell me a little bit about yourself—where you’re from and what daily life is like there? My family and close friends call me Sheen but I use Sheena for work cause I think it's just easier. I'm Filipino currently living in Quezon City, Philippines but I was born in Capiz, Philippines which is one of the provinces here that is known for it's seafood and beaches! Aside from English and Tagalog, I can also speak Hiligaynon which is another language spoken in some parts of the Philippines. I'm also interested in learning some foreign languages like Spanish and Thai. I live with my partner of 12 years and we have 2 dogs. I have different hobbies like watching movies/series, playing boardgames, doing puzzles and we love going to the mall and do Karaoke on the weekends! Daily life here specifically in my area for some people would be a very busy because we are mainly in the metropolitan or center of businesses in the country. Elementary and High school starts 6am and ends 7pm because of shifting schedules due to over population. 1st shift is from 6am to 12pm and next would be 1-7pm. A lot of businesses here also operates at night especially for BPO or Business Process Outsourcing. I used to work at one of these for 7 years so I'm used to my shift. Waking up in the afternoon and sleeping in the morning has become a norm to me. 3. How would you describe your community or the place you live? The community here is generally closer with each other because houses and buildings are next to each other and sometimes, people here just live with their relatives in the same compound or the same houses. We also have a local government which is called 'barangay', it's smallest unit of Government in the Philippines that functions as governing policies, programs and project in the community, delivering basic services and maintaining peace and order. 4. What is your role at Gardenia Cove? My current role in Gardenia Cove is a Virtual Associate who mainly handles Medical Records. Ensuring that patient's medical records and records request from other entities are handled and delivered correctly while adhering to the office policy and HIPAA guidelines as well as sending Referrals to other providers. I also work on Reception task like scheduling appointments, answering phone calls regarding patient's inquiries, such as their copays, appointment dates, records, assisting with payment and etc.

My name is Jelyn Reli. I'm a Filipino, living in Quezon city. Its been 8 months since I graduated in college where I took hospitality management at ICCT colleges. I'm currently working as a mini bar attendant at Dusit Thani Manila, a 5 star hotel in Makati City, Metro Manila. My favorite hobby is cooking foods for my loved ones and friends and my specialty are Filipino cuisine but I also like trying other recipe. If I have a chance, I would like to study culinary and become a professional chef. I also love hanging out with my nieces and nephews and we like going to the park and playing in the arcade. I also like going to different places with my bike just enjoying the view and sceneries and going to different cafe and restaurants to try different foods. Aside from Filipino food, I also love Japanese and Arabic foods. My daily life here is waking up sometime between 9 and 10 AM every day as my shift starts at 2pm and I have to travel for almost 2 hours to my workplace. On Saturday and Sunday mornings, the houses across the street blasts American, Filipino and Korean pop music and people love to sing Karaoke here so It's always like loud for almost every household. The community where I live I would say is not perfect. It's quite peaceful but there are times when it's a chaotic and there are people arguing and even fighting. I live in an area where houses are so close with each other that only a single wall divides the houses. Some people here also lacks education and are struggling financially but as Filipinos, they always wear a smile on there faces and works hard to provide for their Family's needs.

Sheen’s: Personal & Cultural Background What part of the Philippines do you live in, and what is daily life like there? > I live in Quezon City which is part of Metro Manila Philippines located in the Island of Luzon. I would say that it is business centric, populated and it is a fast-phase living kind of culture compared to other places. How would you describe Filipino culture to someone who has never visited the country? > Filipino culture is being hospitable, friendly, and we always wear a smile on our faces despite challenges and calamities that we face. Family, Community, & Values What values are most emphasized in Filipino families and communities? How do concepts like “pakikisama” (getting along) or “hiya” (modesty) influence everyday interactions? > The values that are most notable from Filipinos are respecting the elders. We use "po and opo" which is a polite particle added after each sentence to show respect. We also do the "mano" gesture where we bow down and take the elder's right hand and gently pressing it to our forehead. "Pakikisama" is also something you would often see from us Filipinos. We are taught from our childhood that respect and kindness is a key to being a good member of the society and this is being applied to avoid "hiya" because what you do and how you act reflects with your family's core values. Traditions, Customs & Lifestyle What Filipino traditions or celebrations mean the most to you personally? How would you describe the pace and lifestyle of Filipino culture? > I personally have not celebrated a lot of Filipino traditions but Filipinos are big on Christmas and we even have the longest Christmas celebration. It starts in September and ends in January with a lot of gatherings, party, decorations and even contests. Work & Cross-Cultural Interaction (especially relevant for the friend who works with you virtually) What has your experience been like working virtually with people from the U.S.? > Working virtually with people from the US is challenging because of it's remote set up and somewhat due to the language because we do not speak/write in our mother tongue, but overall, It has been a beautiful journey interacting with the people from across the world because even though we do not share the same culture, we share the same ideas and goals through work collaboration. Have you noticed differences between Filipino work culture and American work culture? What do you appreciate or find challenging about collaborating across cultures and time zones? > I feel like there is not a lot of differences between the work culture but I noticed that American work cultures are more direct and straightforward compare to Filipino work cultures. In regards with challenges, time zone plays a big factor because there is a 15-hour difference and we must work in a graveyard shift. Although I am already used to it, a lot of Filipinos do not prefer this kind of set up. Language & Communication Do you feel communication styles differ between Filipino and American people? In what ways? > As I mentioned earlier, I think Americans are more straightforward and direct and uses clear and concise words whereas Filipino communication style tends to lean on non-verbal cues like tones and gesture that are taken into consideration to show politeness and respect. Social Issues & Modern Life How is the Philippines changing socially or culturally for younger generations? What are some challenges people in your region face that outsiders might not understand? >I think Filipinos are getting more aware and open minded when it comes to a lot of topic and internet plays a big role in this. The new generations are consuming social media that does not only focus on Filipino culture but also other culture from around the world which has pros and cons. Identity & Representation Do you feel Philippine culture is accurately represented in international media? > It is somewhat accurate like Philippines has a lot of beautiful beaches and Islands. Filipinos are hospitable, loves to sing, likes eating or serving lumpia and we also like taking pride of every other Filipinos achievement in the international scene but other than that I believe that there is more to us that is not conveyed in the international media. Reflection & Advice What do you wish more people from other cultures knew about the Philippines or Filipino people? If someone wanted to understand Filipino culture better, what experiences would you recommend > I wish more people from other culture learns more about our cultural tradition including our numerous indigenous tribes that can be found from different parts of the country. Philippines is very diverse and is home to a lot of ethnic groups who has different language spoken, tradition and even clothing. I personally want to learn more about them myself and to experience their daily lives and If I could recommend to someone who wants to learn more about the Philippines, they need to visit the Country and experience it first-hand.
