REPLY TO CLASSMATE'S DISCUSSION

While working in the public administration field (local, state, and federal government or nonprofit sector), do you think lying to the public is ever appropriate? If so, what ethical standards would be violated from a public administrative perspective? If not, explain your rationale.

I think it is very inappropriate for anyone working in any public administration field to lie to the public no matter what the circumstances are surrounding the incident.  I think that serving in a public administration role you should have integrity, honesty and be transparent.  Ethics instruction builds moral character for on-the-job use of moral reasoning enables administrators to identify fundamental problems and balance often conflicting laws, community expectations, and their own consciences.

No one wants anyone representing them who has no ethical let alone moral values about lying to the public.  When serving in any role you must know that there are going to be some good and not so good praises and you have to be prepared to handle each accordingly no matter the backlash that may arise from it.  I believe it is better to get bad criticism for telling the hard truth verses telling an easy lie that you will eventually have to face.  One thing that is for sure rather the lie is uncovered today, tomorrow or years down the road it will be something that you will have to answer for.
