Do not confuse the war with the warrior Failing to recognize the sacrifices of American military men and women even in a war that one does not support is still wrong. Since America's withdrawal from Vietnam and four years after the fall of Saigon, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund established a memorial to those killed or missing during the Vietnam War. It was revealed in 1982 and served to honor those who had given their life during the war. Today the environment for a man or woman serving in the military is quite different from Vietnam. By eliminating the draft and utilizing an all-voluntary military, the armed forces has become more professional, more tolerant, and more efficient. The elimination also “effectively lowered negative sentiment” and increased public appreciation for those volunteering to serve. (Moyer, 2015). Today it is not uncommon for businesses, restaurants, and even vacation destinations to offer discounts for military members as a token of gratitude. I can also can speak from experience on the many handshakes, and “thank-you for your services” I most servicemen and women receive while in uniform. I also notice many vets proudly sporting their “Vietnam Veteran” ball caps, t-shirts, and jackets, this is a testament to America’s change since the Vietnam War ended. Military capabilities and tactics do not always determine success- understand your enemy and know your limitationsThere are limits to the American power to wage war, financially we are restricted by the limited revenue that the public is willing to expend towards war, secondly there are limitations to what are allies are willing to support. By recognizing these limits and understanding the will of our “enemies” we can get a better grasp of the longevity of a conflict. Something that seemed to evade the policymakers of Vietnam. And though it seems that these would be obvious lessons past onto our present government, the American presence in Afghanistan has many wondering if we do understand these important lessons. Rothkopf (2013) explains “there are cultural, historical, geographical, and demographic obstacles that the United States can never surmount. This means that we must test our theories relentlessly. Situations change. So too should policies” (para. 10). The war in Vietnam needs to be discussed, studied, and understood more.Public opinion shows that Americans consistently believe that the Vietnam War was a mistake. But the majority cannot tell you why it started or what it was about. The youth of America is becoming increasingly unknowledgeable about Vietnam as fewer and fewer have personal connections to the war, much less willing to speak about it. And schoolbooks tend to glaze over the controversial war or censor its material. It is our duty to the future generations of Americans to reveal the whole truth behind the Vietnam experience. Since the end of the war, every military conflict has been compared to Vietnam in some fashion. Reagan’s administration used Vietnam as an analogy for his policy in Central America, claiming its goals akin to those in Vietnam: democracy, economic progress, and security against aggression, this time near the American border. (“The Lessons of the Vietnam War”, 2017). The importance of teaching and understanding the whole truth of Vietnam cannot be underestimated as this understanding will serve future Americans the next time one of our presidents decides to scare us into another unjust conflict. References:Moyer, ted.
