I am checking in at a +1 today. I am feeling hopeful for the next eight weeks of classes but overwhelmed trying to get into the groove of things.
After reading the first two chapters of Conscious Capitalism I have not only learned a lot but I have started enjoying the book. I would agree with Mackey and Sisodia that free-market capitalism is made out to be a terrible thing. "Capitalism is portrayed as exploiting workers, cheating consumers, causing inequality by benefiting the rich but not the poor, homogenizing society, fragmenting communities, and destroying the environment" (Mackey & Sisodia, p. 15). I think this quote sums up how people look at capitalism today. People are so quick to judge and jump to conclusions that they overlook a lot of the good. My experience with free-market capitalism has been great. Without free-market capitalism, our society would struggle more than it already is. I have seen free-market capitalism do great things for people, especially small local businesses over the last couple of years. I was reading Conscious Capitalism at work when one of my coworkers asked what I was reading. After they heard the word capitalism, they just laughed and then tried to explain how capitalism is so terrible and it's all about the rich getting richer. When I tried to then explain what the book said she wanted no part in the conversation. I perceive free-market capitalism as a way people can control and influence the market. As the book mentioned, capitalism is also a way to lift people out of poverty. Free-market capitalism creates a supply and demand that allows for multiple variants of the same product or service to enter the market, which requires creativity and innovation. My perspective of free-market capitalism is overall good. I see the benefits free-market capitalism provides to society. In conclusion, three reasons why free-market capitalism is a good essential thing are, that it allows the people to have some control over the market, the market saturation is at an all-time high with so many different varieties of products and services, and creativity and innovation are encouraged, if not required.

+1, Appreciative, I’m appreciative to be healthy, be surrounded by have great family and friends and have a good job.
Chapter one mentions innovation on numerous occasions. I don’t have any direct dealings with innovation, but I love reading and hearing about it. Americans have the free-enterprise to create product like the I-phone and social media applications like Facebook. No matter if you are rich or poor, our society can purchase and use these innovative products because America has free-enterprise capitalism. A lot of Innovative products such as “Facebook” have come under fire by the U.S. government to tighten regulations. If they don’t, then the government can threaten to shut them down, but it takes an act of congress to do that. On the other hand, if you have a communist society like North Korea, the president controls and regulates everything from the economy and to innovation. I’m glad that I live in a society where America has been afforded the opportunity to have free-enterprise capitalism.
I also hope that I’m on the right track as this is the first time for me discussing capitalism
