You have been appointed to evaluate the effectiveness of incorporating solar power or hydrological power into your state. You have been tasked with developing a GIS in order to showcase your analysis. Predict what information you will need to develop a map to display your analysis. Explain your information selection and indicate which online map sources you will need to (review Chapter 5 for some potential online resources).

  • This research article describes a project where GIS was used to evaluate connections between fish stocks and the social, cultural, and economic components of a fishery on land. A key feature of the paper is the demonstration of using GIS to understand complex interactions. The paper supports the week two learning objectives and homework.

  • In this tutorial, students will play the role of an intelligence analyst stationed near Monterey, California, on the fictitious Forward Operating Base (FOB), which is a target of insurgent forces. Your task is to use data and a GIS to better understand the battlefield and prevent future attacks. The geoprocessing tools presented in this tutorial are based on standard Esri Commercial off-the-Shelf (COTS) technologies and commercial data. Skills reviewed will aid class members in completing the week two homework and include creating a map, changing a coordinate system, displaying excel data, and applying spatial and temporal analysis to solve problems.

  • In these two lessons, students take on the role of an urban planner looking for maps from Singapore using Landsat satellite imagery from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Sifting through millions of satellite images can be challenging but this tutorial provides students with the skills needed to find and download public map images. Skills reviewed include: finding and downloading landsat data, and displaying landsat data in ArcGIS. Note: You will need to have ArcGIS Pro installed and 900 MB hard drive space. Total lesson time is 1 hour. The tutorial aids class members in completing the week two homework.
