Critical Essay:

Students  are  required  to  write  a  seven-page  critical  essay  paper  that  illustrates  their 

understanding  of  social  problems  from  a  sociological  perspective  and  how  they  are 

interrelated.  This  essay  will  serve  as  the  final  exam.  For  this  paper  each  student  should 

choose  a  contemporary  film  that  highlights  a  specific  social  problem  in  the  U.S.  or 

abroad. A documentary will not be accepted. Your paper should be focused on analyzing 

how  the  film  social  problem  is  related  to  other  topics  that  have  been  covered  in  class.  

Your paper should use at least seven to ten complementary scholarly resources, including 

academic journals and government reports to support your analysis of the film. Key class 

concepts such as like power, privilege, and oppression should be included in the analysis. 

The  paper  should  be  double-spaced  including  a  cover  page  including  the  Title  of  your 

essay,  your  name,  date,  and  course  name  as  well  as  a  reference  page.  In  addition  to  the 

content, students will be graded for correct grammar and spelling. Citations should be in 

APA style format (you NEED citations). The reference page does not count towards the 

page number. Your final paper should be submitted via on Canvas.
