Discussion post: Between the two essays I like Just Walk on by: Black Men and Public Space by Brent Staples. I like this essay little bit more because opened my eyes to the struggles of being misunderstood or judged because of appearances. I liked his honesty more than anything. It was not like he told his story from a distance, but he dragged the readers right into his life and showed just how it felt to be seen as threatening when someone is only walking down the street.

What moved me about his essay is the way he illustrated everyday occurrences.

Something as simple as walking late at night or going into a store somehow became a constant reminder of how people's fears fed into stereotypes about him. The specifics about ladies crossing streets or people's nervous reactions made me feel the tension with him, leading me to recognize how quick people are to judge others without even trying to get to know them.

Reading this essay also gave me much to consider about myself. I was made to start thinking about how I observe others in public and the key on never jumping to conclusions. Staples's story reminded me that every single person deserves to be looked upon as an independent being.
