Peer Supervision practice
SOWK912 Workshop 3 (Week 6)12
Critical social work supervision Carolyn Noble (pg 47) –Chapter 3, Pease et al (2016)
It requires practitioners to reflect upon their complicity in reinforcing dominant power relations and their role in reproducing privilege and inequality (Pease 2006). In so doing, this practice uncovers subjugated knowledges, to explore what has been hidden from view by the dominant culture. In making visible other forms of knowledge, experience, cultural artefacts and traditions, a new vision of themselves can be created, including their practice and new ways of acting in the world
Critical social work supervision Carolyn Noble (pg 48) –Chapter 3, Pease et al (2016)
• Can you talk about your previous experience or knowledge that informed your thinking and actions?
• What was the source of that knowledge? How was such knowledge produced? Who benefited from it?
• Can you articulate your feelings in relation to the issues discussed? • What new knowledge did you gain from the workshops? • What, if anything would you like to do with this knowledge? • If you were to work with former refugees, what do you see as your
strengths? • What do you see as your areas for learning and development? • What did you learn, if anything about cultural humility? • What did you learn, if anything about cross-cultural communication?
Peer supervision practice 1
Based on video Rania’s Odyssey, we watched in workshop 4, in pairs roleplay a brief peer supervision session using Noble’s critical social work approach and some of the questions on the previous slide or from Chapter 3 of Pease et al (30mins)
