Refections Assignment #8

Students occasionally engage in deviant activity on phones and computers, such as cyberbullying, harassment, sexting, sending nude pictures, or communicating inappropriately with adults. It is not always clear whether and how schools should intervene. While students’ deviant phone and online behavior usually occurs outside of school, it can lead to later problems in school. Parents also frequently turn to school police, counselors, and administration when they catch their child involved in deviant phone and online behavior, and they expect school staff to do something.   Under what circumstances do you think schools should be expected to respond to deviant student activity on their phones or online? (e.g., Serious threats or all activity? Activity that is most likely to carry over into school or all activity? Activity that is against the law, violates school policy, or that may disrupt normal school functioning?) Deviant activity can include a range of behaviors, such as harassing others, making threats online, supporting local gangs, selling drugs, spreading rumors about students or school staff, sharing inappropriate pictures, sexting, etc. Explain why it is important for schools to respond under the circumstances you identify. If you think schools should never be expected to respond, explain your answer.
