Scenario: Your content area professional learning community (PLC) is designing a presentation with ideas on promoting content area literacy at the secondary level. This presentation will be shared with content area teachers at the next PLC meeting and with newly hired content area teachers at the start of the upcoming school year. You have been asked to create the portion of the presentation that addresses the foundations of content area literacy.

Design a 10- to 12-slide presentation that explains the fundamental principles of content area literacy.

• Characteristics: 8 to 10 characteristics of effective literacy teachers
• Sociocultural influences: 3 to 5 examples of how culture influences what students read and write
• Interdisciplinary nature: 3 to 5 examples that target various social and cultural perspectives and promote content area literacy
• Local and global reach: 2 or 3 methods for incorporating local and global issues in various content areas for diverse learners
