 Instructions: Exercise 6: Reading for Ceremony and Ritual

Fiction depends on our knowledge of the cultural meanings of its primary scenes (for instance, you need to know what “pilgrimage,” “offering of relics,” “storytelling,” and “knightly quests” are in order to understand The Canterbury Tales.

For this exercise, list the rituals, ceremonies, or cultural practices that Dr. Faustus relies on. Choose one item from your list and write a page or two comparing the play’s use of it to an earlier text’s presentation of a similar cultural practice.  For example, you could compare feasting in Beowulf to feasting in Dr. Faustus.  List the relevant passages and explain how they are similar or different.
