Journal 6 –Pratt – “Arts Of the Contact Zone” (cont.)

SLOs 1, 3, 4, 6, 8

This text was originally presented to scholars and professors at a lecture at the Modern Language Association Annual Conference.  It was later published in the organization's scholarly publication.  What does she want them to do or think about differently at the end of her discussion.  As you reread, identify key rhetorical shifts in each part.  In this journal entry, you will explore how these choices help to support the meaning-making of her text?

How do you make meaning out of the various parts of Pratt’s “Arts of the Contact Zone,” which begins with Pratt’s son's experiences with trading cards, moves to an analysis of Guaman Poma's The New Chronicle and Good Government, and ends with a discussion of curriculum reform at Stanford? You will find it helpful to look at your notes from our last class session’s discussion as you explore the meaning of other two sections of her larger text.

As part of your response, you should

  1. Identify subjects/main arguments in each section
  2. What rhetorical strategies she employs to support her claims – for example, she writes in the 1st person in the beginning, the 3rd person in the middle, and the first person plural (“we”) in the final section.  There are also significant differences in tone, word choice, etc.
  3. Finally, how does each section contribute to the overall message all the parts combine to further support the overall purpose of her lecture?
