Academic Integrity and AI Policy and Procedures for COM 231
100 Points
Directions: Read, understand, and paraphrase in your own words, the following excerpt taken from your course syllabus for COM 231 Public Speaking about "Academic Integrity". In the text box provided, confirm your reading and understanding by writing a brief paragraph (5-7 sentences) summarizing the content of the policy and the consequences of not following the policies when completing assignments for this course.
Sandhills Community College holds a strong commitment to academic integrity and acknowledges that generative artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool is here to stay. Therefore, it is appropriate to set clear guidelines for responsible and ethical use of available AI tools. These expectations may differ from course to course and between individual assignments within a course. For this course the expectations are as follows:
· Creative AI is acceptable for automated idea generation, structuring, and/or editing. Students may use generative AI to improve clarity or quality of coursework when expressly permitted by instructor. Automation must be disclosed, and the AI-generated content must be properly attributed.
· Plagiarism occurs when representing the work of another person or an artificial intelligence program (such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, Copilot, ‘Humanizers,’ etc.) as one’s own. Failing to cite the original source of an idea, information, or words that are not one’s own; resubmitting work from another course; copying the work of another is not acceptable in this course.
· Unauthorized Collaboration occurs when working with another person (such as a parent or peer) or artificial intelligence program (such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, Copilot, ‘Humanizers,’ ) on an assignment without express instructor authorization and without indicating that collaboration has occurred.
Penalties for academic dishonesty may include the following:
· Failing grade on the test or assignment;
· Failing grade (F or FW) for the course (depending on the point in the semester) as well as immediate dismissal from the course;
· Disciplinary drop from the course reported as an academic honesty violation;
· Suspension or expulsion from the college due to repeated breaches of academic
When a student is believed to have violated the academic honesty policy, the resolution is between the professor and the student. If the solution is unsatisfactory, there is an inherent right to appeal; however, while the accusation of academic dishonesty may be appealed, the penalty may not. The appeal shall be in accordance with the Student Grievance Procedure.
Supplemental Artificial Intelligence Policy and Procedures for COM 231
In COM courses, assignments must be completed by using your own voice. In some brainstorming situations, generative AI assistance may be encouraged as part of the assignment with the use of generative AI by students and for students. All students need to rely on their own knowledge, understanding, language, and skills to complete work. Without exception, outside ideas must be honestly acknowledged and properly attributed. You are encouraged to use Level 1 of the AI Assessment Scale (Perkins, Furze, Roe and MacVaugh 2024) that will serve as a guideline in the course. Co-Pilot is the recommended AI tool because it is approved and vetted by the North Carolina Community College System Office and Sandhills Community College.
Acceptable use of Co-Pilot, Perplexity, Ad Fontes Media, Opposing Viewpoints, etc. as an AI Tool in COM 231:
· Idea generation, drafting, feedback, and refinement.
· You must critically evaluate and modify any AI-generated content you use.
· The content and the tool must be identified and cited as a source.
If unacceptable AI use is suspected in submitted work:
· The student will be notified of the suspected unacceptable AI use and pending failing grade via the assignment feedback/grade in Moodle or by email. Your instructor welcomes the opportunity to discuss the submitted work through the appeal process for the student’s ability to learn.
· In order to appeal, the student must email the instructor to schedule a telephone or Collaborate meeting within 48 hours of timestamped notification of suspected AI use in the assignment. Telephone and Collaborate meetings are available between 8:00 m.-2:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday, excluding holidays. Professional communication is required throughout the process, or the student forfeits the right to appeal.
· The student will be expected to defend the originality and authenticity of their work in the assignment by providing documentation reflecting proof of process (such as notes, timestamped drafts, or similar means) during the in-person Argument alone does not qualify as proof of process.
· At the instructor’s discretion, the student may be allowed to complete an in-person assessment to defend the originality and authenticity of the assignment suspected of violating the artificial intelligence policy.
· If the student does not attend the required telephone or Collaborate meeting or the student does not provide adequate defense/documentation during the meeting, the assignment will receive an automatic failing grade. Artificial intelligence and plagiarism Academic Honesty violations resulting in a failing grade, could be reported to SCC administration.
· Withdrawals of students due to artificial intelligence and plagiarism violations could be recorded as such under the “Disciplinary”
· Per SCC’s Academic Honesty policy, repeated breaches of academic honesty will result in suspension or
