At the end of Chapter 22, Chua reiterates that the “virtuous circle of confidence, hard work, and [achieving] success” is key to the Chinese parenting approach and that the one thing that this approach cannot tolerate is failure (p. 146).    

How are the ideas about the “virtuous circle”—including the need to find success through confidence and practice, as well as the problem of failure having no solution in the Chinese parenting model—illustrated in Chapters 17 to 22?  Discuss two specific examples from these chapters.

Do you think the emphasis on the “virtuous circle” is more beneficial or more detrimental to Sophia and Lulu?  Explain your opinion.
