Q1 (quita)
This is a class discussion. Learners will engage with the instructor and peers throughout the learning week. Initial Discussion posts are due Thursday; peer responses are due Sunday. To motivate engaged discussion, posts are expected to be on time with regular interaction throughout the week. All posts should demonstrate college-level writing skills.
Initial posts must demonstrate comprehension and application of the course materials. Students should have a combination of responses to peers' initial posts AND answers to peers that comment on your initial post—for a total of at least three peer responses. They should be thorough and add to the content of the discussion (not just saying “I agree/disagree” or “I like your post”). Give personal experiences relating to your peers, reflect knowledge of learning materials, and ask probing questions.
Please review the Discussion Guidelines and Discussion Rubric as you prepare. Any changes to these guidelines or rubric will be noted in the individual discussion. Review this short video if you need assistance Participating in Discussions.
Find and read a quantitative peer-reviewed journal article that relates to your topic in which the researchers use existing data (a dataset versus collecting their own data). What information about the dataset do the researchers include? How do they describe their research methods? Which variables do they analyze and why? What are their hypotheses? What statistical analyses do they use?
Explain why discussing the data and methods is important to establish the validity and reliability of the research. Discuss any critiques you have of the Methods/Data section of the article. Are they missing any information that would be useful to the understanding of the research? (Include an APA citation of the article.)

How can you ensure your research maintains integrity and avoids plagiarism while using AI tools to support your work?

- Why do you think many people might be skeptical about psychology being a science?
- Why do you think psychology courses like this one are often required for so many different programs of study?
- Presumably, reality television programs aim to provide a realistic portrayal of the behavior displayed by the characters featured in such programs. This section pointed out why this is not really the case. What changes could be made in producing these programs that would result in more honest portrayals of realistic behavior?
- A study published in the Nutrition and Cancer Journal established a negative correlation between coffee consumption and breast cancer. Specifically, it was found that women consuming more than 5 cups of coffee a day were less likely to develop breast cancer than women who never consumed coffee (Lowcock et al., 2013). Imagine you see a newspaper story about this research that says, “Coffee Protects Against Cancer.” Why is this headline misleading, and why would a more accurate headline draw less interest?
Q6 (jay)
Find a recent news article or report that presents empirical data (for example, a survey, poll, public health statistic, or business report).
Identify and clearly describe:
The population and sample used (or implied)
The variables being measured (qualitative or quantitative)
variance, standard deviation, or IQR) as reported or inferred
Critically evaluate whether the descriptive statistics or visualizations in the article may mislead or obscure certain patterns (e.g. outliers, skewness).
Suggest one additional descriptive statistic or chart (histogram, boxplot, etc.) that would improve understanding of the data, and explain why.
