The NLRA protects employees’ rights to organize, discuss workplace concerns, and seek union representation. Employers may communicate their views about unionization, but they must avoid conduct that could reasonably be interpreted as coercive or retaliatory.

Consider the following scenario:

A warehouse facility is experiencing rising frustration among employees about mandatory overtime and inconsistent scheduling. A small group begins discussing the possibility of contacting a union. Several workers start passing out informational flyers in the breakroom during their off-the-clock time. A shift supervisor notices the activity and tells them to “cut it out” because “corporate will shut this place down before letting a union in.” Later that week, management announces an unexpected increase to the shift-differential pay rate and loosens the overtime requirements “effective immediately.” The same supervisor then privately asks one of the pro-union employees which coworkers attended the meeting.

In your initial post, address the following:

  • Which      actions in this scenario would likely be considered protected concerted      activity under the NLRA?
  • Identify      any unfair labor practices (ULPs) the supervisor or employer may have      committed. Explain why.
  • Would      the sudden improvements in pay and scheduling likely be viewed as lawful      changes or unlawful attempts to influence union activity?
  • How      should management have responded differently to avoid NLRA violations      while still addressing employee concerns?
  • What      additional facts would you want if you were the NLRB investigating this      charge?

Discussion #6: Please address both of the following prompts to frame your main answer post for Week Six (Week of Oct. 12 - 18).

1. Using this week's readings and/or any additional existing knowledge or research, please answer the following as part of your main answer post for Discussion #6: Select one aspect of WWI or WWII that you gained a new insight on in during our readings and videos this week. Once identified, briefly discuss what you learned, as well as why it is significant to better understanding these wars?

2. Within the same body of the response you make to the writing prompt in Part One above, I would ask that you also frame a response to the following question: With the FDR presidency in mind, briefly explain the strengths and shortcomings of his tenure in office, whether in the context of FDR's day or from that of the present?

As you work on your Week 6 Assignment, please integrate your findings and insights into our Discussion. Sharing examples and strategies from your strategic HR plan will enrich the conversation and provide real-world context to the strategic role of HR professionals. This will help you understand how HR strategies can be aligned with business goals and how HR professionals can demonstrate their value as strategic business partners.

CHOOSE ONE FOR YOUR DISCUSSION THIS WEEK:

  1. Discuss      the strategic role of HR professionals. How can HR strategies be aligned      with business goals?

Reflect on your experiences with HR departments that have played a strategic role in your organization. How have HR strategies been aligned with business goals in your workplace or internships? Share examples of successful HR initiatives that have contributed to achieving organizational objectives. What strategies were used to ensure that HR practices supported the overall business strategy?

DQ 6 (stairs) The goal of this Discussion is to explore the life and music of a specific composer from the 20th or 21st century.

Complete both parts:

  1. Many      composers kept diaries during their lives. Choose a composer from the      twentieth (or twenty-first) century and an important event from that      composer's life. Consider how this event relates to the music the composer      wrote. Write a diary entry related to that event in 1st person      voice, as if the composer wrote it (Your choice should not be      in the Jazz, blues, pop, rock, rap, or any popular music genres.  Not      sure?  Search <   20th century composers        >.). Provide a link to a sound file or YouTube video of the      composer's music, to help classmates become more familiar with this      individual's work. In the subject line for your post, include the      composer's name.  List any websites or other sources you used to      write your post at the bottom of the post.
  2. What      is your personal reaction/response to this composer and/or the music we      have studied so far in class? How does learning about music apply to your      life and/or past experiences?

DQ 7 (stairs)

This week, we discussed a number of styles that emerged between the 15th and 18th Century. For this discussion, you will discuss one style based on the first letter of your last name for your initial post.

Renaissance (Last Name A-H): Select one work of art from the module resources or from Google Art and Culture that was created in Europe during the Renaissance. What characteristics of the time period do you notice in the work of art? What do you think this work of art tells us about the culture in which it was created? What values or ideas from the Ancient Greek or Roman cultures do you recognize?

DQ 8 (jay)

Using your data from the Discussion from Week 2, go back and perform a linear regression.  Find the equation of the linear equation that best fits your data and calculate the correlation coefficient (R).  How does this compare to your analysis in week 2?

Data Set 01

Weights (lbs.): 112.9925, 136.4873, 153.0269, 142.3354, 144.2971, 123.3024, 141.4947, 136.4623, 112.3723, 120.6672, 127.4516, 114.143, 125.6107, 122.4618, 116.0866, 139.9975, 129.5023, 142.9733, 137.9025, 124.0449 (n = 20).

Mean calculation

Sum = 2 603.6123

Mean = 2 603.6123 ÷ 20 = 130.18 lbs.

Median calculation

Ordered list midpoint = average of 10th and 11th values = (127.4516 + 129.5023) ÷ 2 = 128.48 lbs.

Mode

All values unique → no mode.

Mean > median means that the distribution is mildly positively skewed because of some heavy observations. The mean utilizes all values, the median utilizes only ranking, and the mode utilizes frequencies (Rakrak, 2025).

Scatter diagram between height and weight gives a positive relationship, but scatterly linear relationship; the taller boys have higher weight, but there is much residual variation in the diagram. The simulated data have lower correlation than actual anthropometric data of adolescents.
