Assignment IV. Early Childhood Reflection on Early Childhood Growth (CO# 1-7)

IV. Reflection on Early Childhood Growth. Due 13th Week. 20% of course grade.

CRITICAL REFLECTIONS

A Reflective Educator transforms epistemology and eventually, pedagogical practice. One area of evolution is often in a realization that a conscious Educator becomes a child and education advocate. Your work in EDU 5220 then, is largely about your becoming a Reflective Educator who understands issues that directly affect educational policy and practice.  To that end, you are asked to do the following:

Part I: Maintain a reflective journal in specified journal discussions here on Canvas, in which you summarize and describe how your knowledge, skills and dispositions for early-childhood pedagogy are evolving in response to your work in this course. Specifically, you should:

·

· Refer to what you have gained from the assigned readings and articles

· Reflect on your own learning process in response to the class discussions, and other relevant experiences conducted in and outside the class

· Respond to any further queries posed in Canvas for each Discussion.

Part 2: Based on the above, in Assignment IV, submit a 5-7-page reflection & advocacy paper (APA professional format):

·

· Summarizing your growth as an Early Childhood Educator in this course

· Stating any shifts in Pedagogical Philosophy in response to newly acquired knowledge

· Showing & describing at least one critical early childhood issue in which you might support advocacy efforts and why.

Note: Thorough familiarity with assigned readings and all major early-childhood concepts presented in the class must be evident. Therefore, all theoretical statements must be supported with the citing of published, current literary sources.

1. Scores:

· Organization: 3/4 - Basic structure present but transitions are weak; lacks proper abstract

· Content Analysis: 3/4 - Surface-level synthesis; limited critical analysis of sources

· Theoretical Connections: 3.5/4 - Minimal theoretical framework; no mention of developmental theorists

· Language Use: 3/4 - Unclear phrasing, grammatical errors ("teachers need to create learning environments")

· APA Style: 3.5/4 - Missing abstract

Total: 16/20

2. Here's your evaluation:

Content Summary (4/5 pts): Clear descriptions of each website's purpose and content. However, summaries could be more concise while maintaining detail about specific features and tools.

Content Analysis - Main Ideas (2/2.5 pts): Good identification of core concepts like professional excellence, quality improvement, and early relational well-being. Analysis could be deeper and more critical.

Content Analysis - Construction (2.5/2.5 pts): Solid evaluation of website usability, noting ECLKC's complexity and Zero to Three's accessibility. Good observation about QUALITYstarsNY's state-specific limitations.

Theoretical Connections (2.5/2.5 pts): Strong integration of multiple theories including Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems, Vygotsky's sociocultural theory, Dewey's progressive education, and Bowlby's attachment theory. Good connections to Morrison text.

Language Use (1.5/2.5 pts): Several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings ("The site is not teacher-focused as much"). Some sentences lack clarity and precision expected in scholarly writing.

Organization (2/2.5 pts): Adequate structure but missing key elements like abstract and conclusion. The paper ends abruptly without synthesizing findings or providing recommendations.

APA Style (1.5/2.5 pts): Multiple APA errors: incorrect title page format, references lack hanging indentation, inconsistent capitalization in references, and one reference (Runnels & O'Dwyer) appears unrelated to the content.
