Goal setting:
Not only in sport, but in your life's journey, you are endlessly faced with choices. What strategy or plan do you apply to those choices? Perhaps some are significant aspirations that without a detailed road map, can never be realized. This week we have studied how to create that road map, goal setting, and the selection of an objective you wish to achieve. As you have learned from Latham & Locke's groundbreaking (1990) research, goals are " the object or aim of an action, for example, to attain a specific standard of proficiency, usually within a specified time limit." Goals can be great motivators, especially as one begins obtaining pieces of the goal. During this time, individuals realize that they are learning, and getting better, and their self-esteem grows. However, goals can also be frustrating and self-defeating when not achieved. As a result, you have studied the key processes necessary to ensure goal setting works: 1. Establish a long-term goal, 2. Create a series of short-term goals that are steps to achieving this long-term goal, 3. Goals must be specific, measurable, challenging, obtainable, and participative where possible. Lastly, but often overlooked which causes the plan to fail, 5. Process goals must be included in the short-term goal selection. Through measuring the process, one calibrates the amount of learning, and if a course correction is needed before it is too late.
Creating and setting goals are key steps but achieving them can be much harder than expected. This is where applying a comprehensive plan will make the difference between achievement and frustration.

Design a 3-page (minimum of 750 words) Goal Setting program for an individual of your choice. This individual (a real live individual, not made up) does not have to be a specific sports athlete, examples can include fitness programs and military preparation. However, the skill of choice must address learning a movement skill of substance (i.e., not brushing your teeth) or achieve an objective. Learning movements must be a key component of the goals. Meaning, that graduation from college with a specific degree does not fit the requirement for this assignment. You must apply at least one tool such as a diary, poster, etc. explained in the required website above. First: Select an individual, explain their situation, and illustrate the meaningfulness of the long-term goal you have chosen. This information will be presented within the Introduction of your 3-page paper (minimum of 750 words).
Second: Complete the attached Goal Setting Worksheet for the specific individual identified previously.
Include this Goal Setting Worksheet at the conclusion of your 3-page (minimum of 750 words) paper (i.e., provide all information for review within a single MS Word document file).
Third: Create a 3-page paper (minimum of 750 words, excluding title and references page and Goal Setting Worksheet) that explains in detail your goal setting plan, including the "motivational tools" you will apply. Of particular importance is showing how the short-term goals are linked to the long-term goal and specifically how you will measure each short-term goal. You must have at least 4 short-term goals and two (2) of these goals must be process goals.
The importance of this assignment is to gain experience assisting someone with establishing SMARTS (i.e., specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, time-bound, and self-determined) goals which address the selected individual's ability to learn/perform a movement (i.e., skill) of substance or achieve an objective.
Remember, APA in-text documentation and cite at least five (5) literary publications, including scholarly peer-reviewed references to support information discussed within your summary.
