Speech Critique
• Choose a speech to critique. The speech must be a minimum of 5 minutes and a maximum of 20 minutes in length. • The most convenient place to find speeches is online. www.americanrhetoric.com provides text and video speeches. Also, Ted Talks (www.tedtalks.com) and YouTube(www.youtube.com) are often great sources, as are many of the news websites. • The speech should be of a professional nature, and it should be one of the following types of speech: Technical, Informative, or Persuasive.• Before watching the speech, review one or more of your speech rubrics to get an idea of what you are looking for – for example: introduction, thesis, conclusion, content, eye contact, tone of voice, gestures, transitions, confidence, etc. • While watching the speech, make notes on the rubric. Hint: You may have to watch the speech more than once. • Once you have a good grasp of the speech and the speaker, begin writing your paper. ▪ 2-3 page paper ▪ Typed & double spaced▪ In the first paragraph, introduce the speaker, topic and overall platform/feel of the speech. ▪ Include the type of speech you are critiquing. ▪ Use a few examples of lines in the speech that had an impact on you and/or the audience. ▪ Use quotations from the speech, and include proper punctuation. ▪ Include items from the rubric that relate to content as well as delivery (eye contact, voice, non-words etc.)▪ Conclude your paper with a summary of the overall content of the speech. ▪ Cite your speech, including a link to the speech.▪ Proofread your paper for grammar and punctuation.▪ Use proper APA format including title and reference pages as well as page numbers and a running header. You may exclude the abstract.
