Public Health Data Science
Public health data science is most powerful when technical concepts are applied to solve real-world challenges. In this discussion, you will ground key terms from this module in the context of a current public health issue of your choice.
Step 1: Choose a current public health challenge. Select a public health issue that interests you, this could be a disease outbreak, health equity concern, environmental health threat, access to care challenge, or behavioral health issue. Identify a specific question or problem within that challenge that could be informed by data analysis. For example:
- How does access to healthy food differ across neighborhoods in your city?
- Which populations are most affected by respiratory illnesses during wildfire season?
- How do vaccination rates vary by demographic group in a particular region?
- What patterns exist in mental health service utilization among college students?
Step 2: Connect at least two key data science terms from Module 1 to your chosen challenge. Explain how these concepts would be relevant or necessary to analyze your chosen issue. You may choose from terms such as:
- Data frame
- Series
- Vectorization
- Filtering
- Group-by operations
- Missing data
- Summary statistics (mean, median, standard deviation, etc.)
- Value counts
- Cross-tabulation
For each term, describe specifically how it would help you understand or address the challenge. What would you be able to learn? What questions could you answer?
Step 3: Discuss at least one data management or privacy consideration. Identify a principle of data management or a privacy regulation (such as HIPAA, informed consent, data de-identification, secure storage, or ethical data sharing) that would be relevant to your analysis. Explain why this principle or regulation matters in the context of your chosen challenge.
Write clearly and support your reasoning with specific examples. Because each student will choose a different public health challenge and emphasize different technical concepts, your response will naturally differ from your peers' contributions.
