1. Morbidity tables in the U.S.

Go the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS) Morbidity Tables: https://wonder.cdc.gov/mmwr/mmwrmorb.asp.  Choose a disease of your choice from the tables (DO NOT REPEAT A PREVIOUSLY USED DISEASE).  Click on the disease and a table will appear.  At the top, it will give statistics for the entire U.S. population and the table further breaks down cases into regions and state by state.  Compare the cumulative cases for this year and last year.  Are the number of cases increasing, decreasing, or remaining the same?  What region makes up the most number of cases?  Research and determine why this region has higher cases than the others.  Discuss if it is one state in particular.

2. Surveillance types

Passive surveillance systems are commonly used for infectious disease surveillance such as the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS).  Describe a scenario where active surveillance is needed.  How is active surveillance for this specific disease conducted? Describe a scenario where sentinel surveillance is the best option and why.  How would it be conducted?
