PSY 111: Introduction to Psychology Learning Unit 2: Assignment

Evaluating Research Reports

Being able to critically sift through reports is an essential skill in differentiating between valid and invalid

research. It is important to examine how research is conducted (whether scientific protocols were

followed), to recognize the variables being measured, and to acknowledge external factors that could

influence research results.

Directions: Carefully read one of the posted articles and answer the questions below.

1. Describe the purpose of the research. 2 points

2. What type of research was conducted (survey, field research, naturalistic observation, case

study, experimental)? 2 points

3. Identify the independent and dependent variables studied. 2 points

4. Name extraneous variables that could affect the research results. 2 points

5. Does the research support the conclusions made? Explain. 2 points

Researchers are constantly replicating experiments to check for reliability, validity, and to build upon

each other’s work in order to expand the field of psychology. Think about the experiment(s) conducted

in the article, how would you expand upon that research? In other words, what kind of experiment or

research study would you create to build on the findings acquired from the article? 5 points

Using APA format, provide the reference of the article (see APA quick reference cheat sheet in LU1). 2

points
