INTRODUCTION` Welcome to the final week of the Forensic Evaluation course!
You have studied the basic procedures for interviewing witnesses and suspects, including children. You have explored the difference between accusatory and nonaccusatory interview strategies and analyzed the utility of evaluations of risk. Most importantly, you have observed a Mental Status Exam and completed an MSE template and report.
This week, we will consider some special topics in forensic interviewing and evaluation, including malingering, lie detection/deception, and the nature of false confessions. One area of particular concern is malingering, which may be more important in forensic evaluation than clinical evaluation. The American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) manual of mental disorders defines malingering as:
“the intentional production of false or grossly exaggerated physical or psychological symptoms, motivated by external incentives”
Clients might malinger in a forensic context for some type of gain or to avoid an adverse event. The stakes are often high in forensic contexts, so it is critical that a good forensic evaluation include an evaluation of malingering.
This week, you will also explore the role of forensic professionals in creating positive social change. You will evaluate your professional growth as a result of completing this course. Looking to the future, what unique skills do you bring to the task of forensic investigation as a result of completing this course

COMPLICATING FACTORS IN FORENSIC INTERVIEWING

There are a number of special issues that arise within the context of forensic interviewing and evaluation that need to be considered in our evaluation of the reliability of the information obtained during the process. The individual being interviewed or evaluated might provide inaccurate information for a variety of reasons. It is important for the forensic interviewer to be aware of the most common reasons individuals provide inaccurate information as well as some of the techniques used to evaluate the veracity of the information provided. The person being interviewed might engage in malingering or otherwise exaggerate symptoms in an attempt to avoid some perceived consequence or gain some benefit. Individuals might lie about facts to protect themselves or loved ones, individuals may confess to a crime they have not committed to avoid distress during the interrogation process, or individuals may simply have a distorted view of the information or lack self-insight.
In this Discussion, you will select one of the complicating factors listed below, and discuss the nature of the complication as well as ways it is addressed in forensic evaluations.

PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND SOCIAL CHANGE
The promotion of social change is a major goal of Walden University. The university describes social change as a “deliberate process of creating and applying ideas, strategies, and actions to promote the worth, dignity, and development of individuals and communities alike” (http://www.waldenu.edu/Walden-Difference/38411.htm ).
This Assignment invites you to reflect on your professional growth and the ways that you can use your new knowledge and skills to promote change in your community. How can you, as a hypothetical future forensic interviewer, contribute to social change? Specify the skills and knowledge that you have learned in this course that could benefit not only your interviewees, but also your specific community-at-large. What have you learned about your own personal limitations and areas for professional growth?
