WEEK 4 : AT A GLANCE EVALUATION OF RISK

INTRODUCTION Do you think violent behavior can be predicted?

The legal system often asks mental health practitioners to determine an individual’s level of risk for some type of behavior, usually dangerousness or sexual recidivism (a relapse into criminal behavior). These evaluations are used by the court to determine criminal responsibility and sentencing. However, these risk evaluations are not always accurate. Consider cases and stories in the media in which this might have been the case. How do inaccurate evaluations impact those individuals who are wrongly assessed? What are the resulting ramifications for society?

This week, you make an informed argument as to whether or not psychologists should use evaluations of risk in forensic settings. In addition, you analyze the limitations and strengths of clinical and actuarial risk assessment approaches.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES Students will:

Evaluate the appropriateness of using risk assessments/evaluations in forensic settings Analyze clinical and actuarial risk assessment approaches Analyze risk factors for forensic-related behavior and related interview/evaluation strategies
