WEEK 4 : AT A GLANCE EVALUATION OF RISK
INTRODUCTION Do you think violent behavior can be predicted?
The legal system often asks mental health practitioners to determine an individual’s level of risk for some type of behavior, usually dangerousness or sexual recidivism (a relapse into criminal behavior). These evaluations are used by the court to determine criminal responsibility and sentencing. However, these risk evaluations are not always accurate. Consider cases and stories in the media in which this might have been the case. How do inaccurate evaluations impact those individuals who are wrongly assessed? What are the resulting ramifications for society?
This week, you make an informed argument as to whether or not psychologists should use evaluations of risk in forensic settings. In addition, you analyze the limitations and strengths of clinical and actuarial risk assessment approaches.

RISK ASSESSMENT: CLINICAL VERSUS ACTUARIAL APPROACHES

The use of risk assessment has been criticized, specifically in forensic settings. Such evaluations have shown limited predictive ability. While the limitations of risk evaluations are acknowledged, some practitioners propose that such evaluations are quite useful and therefore should be utilized.
One of the main issues is the lack of a good model for conducting risk evaluations. While actuarial prediction is based solely on statistical information and not subjective judgment, clinical prediction relies on a collection of medical signs, symptoms, and other findings. Research suggests that actuarial prediction is more accurate than clinical prediction. A significant error exists in both approaches, however, and the wide variability in methods used to conduct evaluations of risk is continuous.

Read Tardiff and Hughes’ Chapter 15 Structural and Clinical Assessment of Risk Violence. Read Maden’s article suggesting the inevitable occurrence of repeated violence by offenders. Read Grove et al Clinical versus mechanical prediction: A meta-analysis. Think about the limitations and strengths of clinical and actuarial approaches. Consider whether psychologists should use risk evaluations considering the high probability of error. Continue to be mindful of cultural factors that could influence risk evaluations.

Discuss the strengths of both clinical and actuarial approaches to risk assessment. Analyze the limitations of both clinical and actuarial approaches.

EVALUATING RISK FACTORS Mental health professionals are often asked to assess someone’s risk for a specific behavior in the future within different forensic contexts. For instance, a mental health professional might be asked to evaluate a juvenile’s likelihood of future violence given different dispositional outcomes (e.g., residential treatment, detention), an adult sex offender’s risk of continued offending as part of a parole hearing, or a mother’s risk of substance abuse problems within a family court dispute. Assessing risk is a difficult and complex process requiring knowledge of not only the risk factors associated with a given behavior within a given population, but also appropriate methods for evaluating risk and the limitations of risk assessment.
In this assignment, you will research some of the risk factors for a given behavior relevant to forensic contexts and suggest evaluation and interview strategies to assess such factors. You will then prepare a PowerPoint presentation of your suggestions.
Review this week’s Learning Resources, including the article, Sexual violence risk and protective factors: A systemic review of the literature, on risk factors for violence. Select one area from the list below of behavior commonly assessed for risk in forensic settings, and research some of the risk factors for this behavior:

Locate two resources from the Walden Library or other academic source that discuss risk factors for the specific area you selected.
